Monitor Drivers - Are they needed for Win7?

I just completed the build of a new system and have the Windows 7 RTM software loaded on the system. Since the system is new I just have it connected to an old tube monitor which isn't so great. I was looking at getting a new 23 inch LCD that can do 1920 x 1080 but I'm wondering if I'm going to need a specific driver for the monitor or whether Windows 7 will see it automatically as plug and play? So far one monitor I'm looking at only has a driver for 32-bit Vista and my machine is 64 bit. The other monitors didn't have any drivers so I'm worried about buying something now. Should I be concerned?

The majority of the time, Windows or Windows Update will find a monitor driver for you. If it doesn't, or one does not exist, it will simply use the generic Plug and Play driver.

Either way, a new monitor will still work fine. The only difference is you may have to manually change the resolution.

I'm looking at several 23 inch models at Best Buy. There's an Acer H233H bmid model that's $210 on sale. Theres also the LG W2343T at $220, along with a SamSung P2370 at $270. Beside those there's a Dell, an ASUS, HP and yet another Samsung All under consideration. The Acer has drivers for Windows Vista 32 bit but I'm running Windows 7 RTM in 64-bit. A couple others I checked didn't seem to have any drivers for any OS and that was my concern. If I went with the Acer should I try and install the Vista Drivers or just not load anything? Would it be correct to assume that if the monitor had no drivers then none are required? I just didn't want buy something and find out that I can't do 1920 x 1080 until I loaded a driver and then not have one since Windows 7 isn't out yet.

Hi and welcome to sevenforums

Really you should be ok. If no win 7 driver for the monitor you can use vista which should be out. You can install in compatability mode if nec. If you're buying name brand you should be ok

strangely perhaps, my samsung 2494 needed a driver to work properly under vista - every time i played fullscreen movies, the monitor would flicker. i was about to send it back when i thought "maybe it needs a driver?" i've never had to install a monitor driver before.

luckily this same monitor works fine under windows 7 - just don't let windows update update your monitor profile!

all this seems like negative comments for samsung monitors - they aren't meant to be - this monitor is the best i've ever owned - i love my sammy!
