Monitor goes blank

My windows 7 has been a complete nightmare. Upgrade from Vista, didn't work since it got stuck and the rollback to vista was corrupted. I lost all my data, but that's not why I am here.

After cursing at Microsoft I did a complete fresh install of windows 7. It seemed to work except for this freak error. My monitor goes blank when windows 7 starts after the installation has finished.

I get an image "Windows is starting" but then it just goes blank. I got a nvidia 9600gt.

I can get an image by plugging in my projector with a vga/dvi connector. With this I downloaded the nvidia drivers but windows seven just fails to regocnize my monitors. I have tried with another lcd with dvi, but all it recognizes is the projector.

I have tried reinstalling. Same problem, when windows 7 starts, if I got an LCD plugged in which have worked fine during the whole installallation it just goes dead when it's finished... and all that works is the stupid projector with vga/dvi adapter if I plug it in.

Any advice what to do now? After messing with windows 7 for 24 hours I feel like I am on candid camera.

If VGA devices work but DVI devices don't, it sounds like you still need to find the right video driver. First, make sure you didn't download a driver with the wrong bit architecture (32- vs. 64-bit). What model is your Nvidia card?

You definitely don't need to drain your energy reinstalling over and over - just get comfortable using the projector for now, and maybe move your PC to a dark room until we figure out a solution.

What is happening that suddenly takes the monitor out of the picture (or vice versa) is that it loads the driver for a video or tv tuner card that is outputted to other than that monitor. Happens every day here.

You likely need to figure out and correct the output, or default to onboard graphics to finish your install.

I have asus nvidia 9600 gt.

I have downloaded the correct driver from Asus.

My samsung lcd with dvi which worked perfectly with vista just goes blank when windows 7 starts but I know it works because it shows the boot info. It's when windows starts it goes blank. I have installed a driver for this lcd too.

when I plug in a vga monitor it works, but when I plugin both the samsung with dvi aswell as the vga, the vga monitor gets the "extended" desktop, like just an image of the desktop where you cant do anything and the dvi is blank as usual.

I can't use the nvidia control panel either because when I plug in the dvi the other vga gets the extended desktop,.

I don't understand this, I had no problems with Vista... for windows 7 has been a nightmare experience.

I thought you said the VGA monitor works when you plug it in by itself? You should be able to access the Nvidia Control Panel that way...

yeah I can, but to setup dual monitors in the nvidia control panel I have to plug in the one that goes blank and then the old vga that works get "extended desktop" which just shows the desktop without anything else....

well, after having tried all the latest drivers for 9600gt nvidia for windows 7 I in desperation tried to install the old vista drivers from my old cd, and wam, I got a picture....!!!!! so obviously it was an issue with windows 7 drivers

Weird! Well, either way I'm glad you were able to get it solved.

You might want to set Windows update so it won't install a hardware update without you knowing.
