Monitor goes into power save mode while playing games. Forced restart.

As the title states. Just recently my monitor has been going into power save mode while playing certain games. Not all games but some games. Which I am trying to figure out what the problem is before I take it to the shop. If i can somehow fix this issue myself that would be great. Since I really can not afford to buy a new system right now but will consider it if that is the case.

Before we get started I would like you to know the things that I have already done and still couldn't find a way to fix it. I do not think it's an over heating issue since I have ran programs to test my GPU temp and it seems fine. I tried the FurMark program and it shows that the temp is around 65 degrees. Which I was told that anything under 90 degrees is fine. I cleaned out the case so there is no dust in there anymore as well. I checked for any viruses and my pc is clean of any viruses. Lastly, I have also went into the power options menu and switch to high performance and changed the settings to Never on both sleep mode and turn off display but I still get that power save mode problem.

This problem just recently happened as well after I put in a new keyboard and mouse about a week ago. Not exactly sure if that caused anything though. I doubt it but could be. For the most part my system runs fine but just some games I play goes into power save mode and I am forced to restart my pc. Other times it automatically restarts my pc. I saw that it could be a dead battery on the motherboard that needs to be replaced or maybe that my graphic card is damage but I am unsure. So any help in this matter would be appreciative. Even if it means I need to take it to the shop to get fixed at least I can know what the problem might entail. Thank you for your time.


The PSU wattage is 300 watt max. Should not exceed 160 watt.

Have you checked your screen-saver settings?

I had something similar happen while watching movies and it turned out to be a screen saver issue.

As part of my trouble shooting, I set the Power Options to never dim or turn off the display but the problem remained. Eventually I traced it to my screen saver which was enabled but set to "none" so the screen just went blank at the time-out I had in my SS.

Does it happen after a specific period of time or is it random? If it is the SS, the problem will occur at the time you've set in the SS. The clock starts after you last touch the keyboard.

It may be happening only during games because you're using a controller and not touching the keyboard. And it may happen only on some games and not others because of the way the game communicates with the computer; some games may disable the SS or periodically make a keyboard entry every minute or so.

Disable the screen-saver or set the time out at 60 minutes and see what happens.

In Summary:

Switched it to 60 mins - works for a bit longer then goes to Power Save Mode.

Never had this issue before installing my wireless keyboard which is brand new.

Some games I don't use a controller, I use my keyboard.

The keyboard is USB so should I try plugging it in to another port?

Would a reinstallation of windows fix it? Although it doesnt seem like a virus so not sure.

Any software I can download to find the issue or any steps I can take? The problem happens every 45 mins to 1 hour.

Didnt occur before installing the new keyboard but it may just be a coincidance.

I tried reinstalling my games too and that didn't fix it either.

What should I try?

Hi,

You might try uninstalling and re-installing the graphics drivers and chipset drivers, if not done already.
You may also try using the video card on an alternate system or else try using an alternate video card on your system (if available) to isolate probable video card issue.
And try using an alternate video cable as well(cable used to connect video card to monitor).
Also, see if you can try an alternate monitor as well.

One thing I would like to know is, when the monitor goes into power save mode, does the audio output of computer stops as well?

Hello,

I mentioned the screen-saver conflict because it sounded similar to something I'd experienced. If you've ruled out a power-option setting and a screen-saver issue, I'm not sure what to tell you.

One question? Does your computer function normally when you are not playing games? Can you browse the net, email, and other routine PC stuff without experiencing the monitor issue? If so, it would tend to eliminate hardware issues except hardware specifically associated with games (controllers etc.). any new hardware should be particularly suspect. As mentioned, re-installing is a first step.

If you don't lose any other functionality except the monitor going into power-saver mode, it almost seems like a settings issue. In other words, the computer is doing what it's set to do. Finding that setting can be an issue.
