Monitor going to sleep then BSOD and reboot. .DMP can someone read it?

I have two Dell Optiplex 170L desktops that had XP and I just installed Windows 7 as well as installing different video cards (Nvidia GE Force 6200 with 512mb) for both Dells so Windows 7 would work.

Both Dells while browsing the internet with IE11 or Firefox are randomly flashing "monitor going to sleep", then it goes to BSOD, reboots and creates a dump file. I have the .DMP file attached if someone can read it to point in the right direction of the failures or suggest the next step. I suspect the video card has something to do with this but I'm not a pc guru.

I believe I have the latest video card drivers installed - GE Force 6200 driver version 9.18.13.774

Dell Optiplex 170L Intel P4 3.0gb with 2gb memory
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
Western Digital 80 gb drive.
BOIS version/date A07,1/21/2005

Thanks for the help.
Darryl

Stress test your graphics card with Furmark

I recommend running it for around 30 minutes

   Warning

Furmark will increase the temperature of your GPU rapidly so keep and eye on your temperatures

Hi Dvick.

It is a very old branded desktop, so stop 0x116 (display/graphics failure) is not very unnatural; plus your computer is of a very congested build.

Check if the Power Supply Unit (PSU) supplying adequate power to the computer or not.
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator
Also let us know the wattage of the PSU.

Is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy. Alternatively, you can publish a Speccy snapshot too: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/311593-speccy-publish-snapshot-your-system-specs.html .

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.

Install the NVIDIA DRIVERS 314.22WHQL only.

  • Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features
    • 3D Vision Control Driver
    • 3D Vision Driver
    • Graphics Driver
    • HD Audio Driver
    • PhysX
    • nvidia Update
(Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
  • Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
  • Download 314.22 WHQL. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:

Let us know the results.

Thanks for the reply. The PS is 250 watt. I know once the Dell was only powered up for less than 10 minutes and it failed with the "monitor going to sleep, BSOD and reboot.

I just looked to "Install the NVIDIA DRIVERS 314.22WHQL only" and it is listed for 64 bit and my PC is 32bit.

Should I still download and try?

Well, for 32 bit, get this one: NVIDIA DRIVERS GeForce 314.22 Driver WHQL

250 watts are not enough of a power supply. You need to upgrade it to a bigger (I guess it will bring some new questions in front of you, like the room in the box).

Two other information are needed, as per my last post. The system temperature and the GPU stress test result.

Driver and Test results

I downloaded the driver you mention ( NVIDIA DRIVERS GeForce 314.22 Driver WHQL) however it failed saying no hardware compatible installed for this driver (or words to that effect) so maybe I have the latest version installed now. I'm using GE Force 6200 video card. If you know of a better PCI card (PCI only, no PCI-E because this Dell 170L only has PCI slots) that will work please let me know.

Next I ran Speccy and attached is the screen shot. The graphics card looks to be running cool.

Then I ran Furmark with no issues and the temp only changed from starting at 39c to 48c. Screen shot attached.

I did look up some specs and saw where the 250 PSU should work with this Dell and the GE force card but I'm open for whatever is next.

I'll keep researching so your help is appreciated.

It looks like a big artifact. The image should look like this:

I think better you use the onboard graphics and observe the situation. You should have intel onboard graphics, as per the specs here: Dell OptiPlex 170L Specs - CNET

Unfortunately I only have remote access to either one of these Dell 170L's so my screenshot isn't showing the best graphics. I'll try to talk my brother through the Furmark process locally to the Dell and take another screenshot.

As far as the on-board graphics card it's not compatible with Windows Aero or so the Windows Advisory log shows but I might get my brother to move the monitor cable over and try it out. At this point I don't know if Aero is even needed with W7 but I'll browse around on that one.

Thanks

The video card requires a 250w power supply as minimum.
I doubt that old 250w power supply is capable of that. With a 18 amp 12 v rail.
It probably couldn't do that when it was new.
