Monitor screen resolution/size

when i hook my inspiron 17 with W7 up to my Dell 22" monitor, the combination will not allow for the highest screen resolution without shrinking the display by 50% with black sides.

inspiron resolution with no dell monitor = 1600x900 .....all ok

inspiron resolution = 1440x900 , when hooked to dell monitor display is full screen

inspiron resolution = 1600x900, when hooked to dell monitor display is about 50% with black sides???

i'm sure i can't be the only one not to be able to figure out WTF is the problem.

have you tried using the adjustments in the nvidia control panel ?

It should be in the right click context menu, r click a blank spot on the desktop to see if it's there.
