Monitor sound problems

Today I bought new headphones and went to try them on my computer. The driver software installed but sound would not play through the headphones, so after playing around in the control panel under "Hardware and Sound" i was shown icons for my monitor, my headphones, and my virtual sound output. I right-clicked the monitor and was prompted to disable it as a sound source. Now my audio plays through my headphones but not my actual monitor. Under "Hardware and Sound" the monitor icon does not even appear anymore. Is there any way that i can restore my monitor as a sound device, but still be able to switch freely between headphones and speakers?

(Also I have my computer connected to the monitor by an HDMI cable, if that helps.)

You can only have one default audio playback device. The "Speakers" (the PC's sound card), HDMI, USB Headphones, etc. You can't have both.
