Hi,

I have a basic system which is an Asrock N68-VS3 FX motherboard with an AMD Sempron 145 processor. It's just a 2.8Ghz single core processor.

Anyway, using the simple feature in the BIOS I unlocked the second processor. Now it shows as a "DualCore AMD Athlon II X2 4450e".

The problem is that now the core temperature shows as 0 ºC, and before when only one core was activated it was shown around 30 ºC

The thing is that this is the first time I do something like this so I'd like to monitor the temperature for a few days just to check it won't overheat or melt, lol

I found this thread but couldn't use that solution

I couldn't find the ACC option in the BIOS menu. And I also read somehwere else that it will be activated by default when unlocking the second core.
So... there's no way to check the temperature now?

I understand the CPU temp shown in HWiNFO might not be accurate.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Ron just as an exercise try Speccy and see what it comes up with Speccy - Download

I can't make out if you have checked with the BIOS either so what is that showing?

I couldn't find the ACC option in the BIOS menu.
On your motherboard it is called UCC instead of ACC. Exact same function, different name.

As for the core temps reading zero, that happens on any AMD CPU that has the capability of unlocking cores. There is also nothing you can do about it short of relocking the unlocked core. As far as the temps go, the CPU/socket temp is a better indicator of the temperature as the core temps on AMD CPU's don't really read correctly until it is under load, and even then can still be off.

As long as the CPU is stable with the second core unlocked and you have the CPU/socket temp, don't worry about it and enjoy your dual core.

ICit2lol: Thank you for replying. I had tried that as well, forgot to mention it. My bad. Thanks a lot anyway. And no, I hadn't checked the BIOS, I did now. It's showing CPU as 31 ºC (88 ºF) and that's it.

TVeblen: Thank you. I tried SpeedFan. It shows the core as 0 ºC and CPU as 28 ºC (82 ºF). It's quite different from the BIOS reading. It also showed "WARNING: bad Winbond($5CA3,$C1) identify (W83627DHG-P,W83667HG)" which kind of worried me. So I'll Google that.

stormy13: OHHH so that's why. Thank you! Well, I obviously enabled that to unlock the extra core, duh. So I can't disable it unless I want it to be single core again. Thank you then, so I'll check the CPU temperature for a few days and make sure it doesn't go any higher than 60 ºC (140 ºF) when doing "heavy" tasks.

I say "heavy" like that because this system has a basic use. Internet stuff and maybe burn a DVD or encode a movie, some Photoshop from time to time. Run a virtual machine on VBox and that's it. No more than that.

Thanks a lot to all of you.
I'm quite happy with the resolution.
Well, actually no, but I'm happy I got it figured out thanks to you so now I know.

Ron what sort of cooler have you on the CPU? the fan speed seems rather fast to me suggesting maybe you need more than a the stock cooler or a fresh compound application.

As I recall the cpu/cooler from amd had a pretty small fan, that may explain the high fan rpm. The reading from hwinfo64 look good to me, about the same as my 64x2 athlon 4400+. I put a oem cooler/fan from a am3 fx4130 and it just pokes along at around 1k rpm keeping cpu below 50C when under load.

Yes I agree Mad the thing that concerned me was his BIOS fan reading shows it spinning at some (I think) ridiculous speed - 3300 rpm which is why I would like to know what sort of cooler is on and I am guessing it will be a stock one.

Hi, thank you for replying and for asking.

Yes, just the stock one, the one that came with the AMD CPU.
Considering what you said, I'll add one fan to the case tomorrow night when I get back from work. I already checked the pricing and availability and it's ok.

EDIT: Wow you read the fan speed, I wasn't expecting that. Thanks for your consideration, I appreciate it very very very much.

Ron mate aftermarket coolers are really quite cheap mate and you would be far better of getting one fitting it with some decent compound like Arctic Sliver or Noctua NT-H1.

To clean the CPU up before the compound use the Arctic cleaning set http://www.arcticsilver.com/arcticlean.htm

I suppose depending where you are this is a nice quiet one and not too expensive Cooler Master: Hyper 212 EVO

ICit2lol: Thank you for your suggestion.
I'm travelling tomorrow out of town and going to buy what you suggested. Shipping price was ridiculously expensive so I decided to wait a few more days and get it myself. I found the exact model you suggested and I was advised it's quite effective.

So thanks a lot once again :)
