In this country, even the companies with over 400k employees would never tolerate someone just saying they were going to take off for five weeks just like that. Cultural differences.

I feel sad for those who can't take a vacation because they get bored because they usually are the ones who will die soon after retirement. Before I retired the first time, I had five weeks of vacation a year (I was a long time employee) and had no trouble finding something to do. Heck, I trouble finding enough time to do all I wanted to do.

That's why you have to do vacation planning so that not the whole department leaves at the same time. Before I retired, I had 10 weeks of vacation per year - but then I never had the time to take it all. The company paid me a big bundle for vacation owed when I retired.

But in the case of the US manager in the early 60s, he just did not want to do that. Only wanted us to tell hime when we go on vacation. I guess he did not expect some European who came with 7 weeks of yearly vacation (the US standard was 2 weeks then). But there was really nothing he could do about it.

I think that the Board Members and Executives of Microsoft are worried that the next thing Microsoft has built will be a gallows.
A change has to be made to improve sales of Windows 8 in both mobile and desktops/laptops.
To me that change has to be giving options to the consumer of what style of Windows 8 they want on what device.
This is my 2+2 must =4 thoughts.

The obvious, commonsense solution.

Something "modern" executives are sorely lacking in.

.....And I'm not saying Windows 8 is perfect, I'm just saying the idea behind it is on point. Fix a few things here and there, and both mobile and desktop users could have the best of both worlds.

My two cents.

Sygnus what you're saying is conceivable, BUT Microsoft has shown no signs of concern whatsoever for what desktop users want or need in W8.
If M$ ever adds some desktop friendly options to W8 a lot of people will take a more serious look at it, but so far M$ has only thumbed their arrogant noses at desktop users, and the leak of Blue so far shows only more of the same.

There's absolutely no reason why they can't give some ground to accomodate the desktop portion of their customer base.
All we're asking for is some worthwhile desktop friendly options, but all we're getting is arrogance and indifference.

I know the popular thing for everyone is that Microsoft immediately abandon ship, but sometimes you can't just pull the plug because your critics say so. If this were so, we wouldn't have any innovation.

Anyway it's too early to call. We'll see what Blue has to offer, than go from there. If the Market still hasn't warmed up to 8, then Microsoft will have to change or tweak some things.

And I still maintain that the desktop as we know it is gone. They'll be some changes, maybe not as drastic, but they will be changes. It's not about what the old timers want. it's about what the mobile society wants. It's forward, not backwards.

That's the way I see it.

Will they turn their phones and tablets sideways to do spreadsheets, snap on rubbery keyboards to do word processing?

This is at least half of the market, so how are you ever going to squeeze them into a tablet or phone to do their real work when they can spread out and sit back in front of a 24" LED?

Old Timers?? Aside from that, if "It's about what the mobile society wants", then why isn't this mobile society buying W8 if it's so great? One reason is because they're too busy buying IPads instead.

And how will the 'mobile society' feel when all those 'Old-Timers' and their 'dinosaur' desktops
and laptops have gone, and there's no quality content for them to consume because they
killed-off the men and the machines which create that content? (And that's not to mention
the light-years of valuable knowledge and experience these 'Luddites' and 'fossils' possess).

Sorry if you took it that way Sygnus, it wasn't intended that way.
"Options" was only stressing a word, not a so called "pissing contest". There was no strong language involved or intended.
I've wondered about your tone a couple times as well but I gave you the benefit of the doubt.
Sometimes that just happens online when you can't hear or see the person.

Yes it does get passionate at times. As I've stated before that some of the arguments here should be directed at Microsoft, not each other. If you agree like you said that M$ should indeed make some accomodations for the desktop needs of a large portion of their customer base, which is not unreasonable, then you and I are not far apart.

This is true.

At any rate it seems I've become the unofficial spokesperson for Microsoft and W8, and that is not my intention. I wasn't impressed with the OS either till I started playing with it. Sure it could use some polishing, and yes a dedicated desktop version would be nice. So we'll see what's next.

Dallas take a deep breath and ponder on this.

Windows 7 users don't want to stop or hinder any operating system on any device. We don't want people to use desktops if they don't want to. If people want their computing experience to be mobile that is hunky dory.

It's not a choice of take one or the other. (mobile or non-mobile) We want both or all. We want the ability of choosing which device to use and when. To make this happen we need operating systems that fits the way each device is designed to be used.
I know of no one who wants to stop or hinder the mobile market. Let it grow and allow those that choose mobile be happy. Please keep in mind that desktop/laptop users can and do use mobile devices also. I would venture to say that most mobile devices are designed for social media. That is a good thing if one choose to do that.

All PC/Laptop users are asking/wanting is a operating system that works well and correctly on such hardware.
The market place is telling the world that Windows 8 as it is today is not getting the job done. I'm not going to show a bunch of articles to prove a point; we have all read lots of them already.

Microsoft doesn't have to abandon 100 million plus PC/Laptop users to join the mobile market. Microsoft can be a big player in both markets and I wish them well in both.
Windows 7 users would move to Windows 8 when desired or needed if Windows 8 could get the job done.
Most of us have went up through the chain of Microsoft operating system which indicates we are not scarred of change. We like change but only when it is a change for the better.
All PC/Laptop users are asking for is a operating system the fits the needs of PC/Laptop users. We do not want Microsoft to abandon the mobile market to make a PC/Laptop operating system.
Microsoft could be a big player in both markets if they would remove their head from the dark orifice they have placed it in.

I may have played this broken record before but there are simply too many practical office based applications for laptops/pcs for them to be abandoned. Correspondence, data entry, financial programs (inc Excel), CAD, Photo processing, software development...blah, blah. I do all of this even in a home environment.
A touch screen tablet doesn't cut it. But you'd be mad to think tablet devices don't have a place - the sales show it! IMO you need to make them complementary devices without nobbling desktops in the process. The general comments here suggest Windows 8 hasn't cut it.
