You might find it is okayish as long as you use one of those to boot to desktop and navigate about.

Both work well.

Complete pain without a start menu, using those fisher price squares and things popping up full screen covering over what you doing.

I found that windows defender caused some probs, so turned it off and installed Avast Free.

It is miles better.

I'll give those a look. As for Defender, since it includes MSE, I'll give it a try for now, but If I have issues, I'll look to switch. BTW I just uninstalled the trial version of MacAfee so MSE it is.

It leads to over/under use of particular muscle groups, which then has negative effects on the surrounding area and can cause specific problems with range of motion and shoulder stability. I can't imagine the people I will be seeing in 5-6 years if reaching your arm in front of you becomes the norm, rotator and shoulder girdle stability are going to be hurting. Of course that's just the trainer in me

You might want to watch for the surveillance. There is more of that. Not clear to me exactly how much.

It sends info about what you have downloaded and installed to a brand protection Agency.

I expect more of that will be coming. As Ms turn it into a phone - for consumption, the rights owners will want all kinds of rights control stuff. MS will be keen to provide it one way or another.

Good ol frozen shoulder. People can't appreciate how delicate their bodies actually are, even though they are so durable. I also see a lot of over taxation of the LPHC in a particular direction due to all of the printers, phones and what not located next to or at least on the same side as their mice, thus rotating constantly, causing tightness in various muscles.

The actual Win7 start menu is grafted onto Win8, Metro screen is toggled off using Windows 7 Start Menu for Windows 8.

On my Dual Boots it even brought over my Start Menu customizations and settings from 7. Otherwise you'll be asked to insert your 7 disk during install. It's worth it.

Why such hate for the start menu? I didn't think at first that it would start such a commotion, but it seems more and ore people are against 8 b/c of this lack of choice (I'm one of them). Did MS decide that the start menu could be the reason tablets and touch screens could have a low turnover rate?

Not much they can do to stop all 3rd party versions - but they can at least remove thier own code to make it more difficult.

They are trying to keep users in the mobile phone interface as much as possible.

They have a thing called a start screen - full screen billboard to lead people into MS services .

I suppose many are used to that on a phone.

MS wants to do the same to a pc. Walled garden - lots of revenue opportunity for MS.

The eventual aim ( alittle way off yet ) seems to be that everything will be online - even the os. You acces it from a small device with a phone style interface. Mainly for consuming. There will be costs to the user of course.

Seriously? I'd only read that Metro was being refined further to be less reliant on the desktop.

I remember reading about that. While users can turn it off, it's turned on by default and is a very iffy thing to have running in general. It's just another reason I won't be touching Windows 8 with a 10ft pole.

I can remember those old VT278H "boat achor" crts Dec had back then as well.

By the time I got to Alpha servers the terminals were gone and replaced by PC's and we used laptops for service work. When I retired in 06 there were still a lot of Alpha systems running applications that would need retired with the systems and that meant large outlays of $$'s

When I left VM ware was catching on big time running on Compaq/HP servers.

But I remember well the Singer System Ten with core memory and Model 80 CRT boat anchors.:huh: they were good for eye strain and head aches.

I've just not convinced myself to spend another $100 for Win7 to replace the win I bought when I built this PC

You always have the option for seeing a dual boot as well as simply running one OS. I wouldn't see 7 added into the 8 BCD or vice versa however while adding the 8 CP into the 7 BCD saw not one problem. A stand alone install on a separate drive and the good old boot device menu F4, F8, F11, or F12 key pressed to boot into one or the other should work with the need for Disk Check to correct numerous errors on both C volumes! I ran smack into that one when trying out the RP's PC Refresh option which performs a clean install of 8 all over not a repair type install option available!

Those oldies as far as the monochromes were notorious for eye strain and burn in problems when having text displayed constantly! The pre-screen saver days for sure back then! When expediting orders at DEC you constantly saw text displayed for shipping labels as well as other things. The VT278H was the cube shaped crt back in those days while the managers and clerical might see the newer crts just coming out during the early 80s. The VT278Hs however were mostly used at terminal stations rather then found at the desk.

What new hardware will Win7 not support? Haven't seen any yet.

Some consumers may look on their Win8 PC's Support webpage to find there are no 7 drivers, not knowing that Win7 would likely install them all anyway, and those still missing after install will be delivered by Windows Updates or found on the web.

It's possible 8 drivers will work on 7 since 7 and Vista drivers will work on 8! We know that from simply trying out the CP and RP builds when there were no 8 drivers to find even in beta form. And even some new boards still offer XP drivers while most now however are starting to phase XP out entirely when checking the support pages for various makes and models of boards recent and brand new. Eventually as all other version have suffered it will be XP then Vista and then 7 to follow while still quite a few years before nothing can be done! Why XP is now 12yrs. old and still sees some drivers.

Start menu developers will be able to make new versions that don't depend on MS native start menu code. Fortunately, they will have had a look at the leak that is all over the net.

Why am I not surprised? Here's something else to fester over about the general slump in the PC market by one of the presently leading manufacturers.

That’s the starting point for the Dell Special Committee’s list of negatives, which opens by citing “decreasing revenues in the market for desktop and notebook PCs and the significant uncertainties as to whether, or when, this decrease will end…” The Special Committee blames the slowdown on a variety of factors:

• continued macroeconomic pressures
• lengthening replacement cycles
• the uncertain adoption of the Windows 8 operating system
• unexpected slowdowns in enterprise Windows 7 upgrades, and
• increasing substitution of smartphones and tablets for PCs.

The industry as a whole is also under pressure thanks to “the increasing usage of alternative PC operating systems to Microsoft Windows.” Presumably that’s a reference to both Apple’s OS X, which is applying pressure at the high end of the market, and Google’s Chrome OS, which has scored some recent gains with extremely low-priced models from Samsung and Acer.

The Special Committee also notes “the increasing importance of the smartphone and tablet markets.” That trend is especially unfortunate for Dell, which “currently has vey little presence” in that market.

A little piece from the report seen at Dell's directors forecast a grim future for the PC industry | ZDNet showing how the other OS guys are starting to creep in where MS is apparently fumbling the ball! The long term effect will also impact other desktop manufacturers not presently into the tablet/phone market.

sometimes I do work for one of the Largest Oil companies in the world -- these companies are certainly not averse to using new technology (or hardware) when it suits them --However even in 2013 some of the servers are STILL running versions of Ms Server 2000 -- so it does the job that's required of it --

jimbo45 makes a good point but my concern has always been to keep my legacy hardware, like my MDP-130s running. Why buy new when what you've got does the job, especially better that the rest?
Fortunately, a guru of sorts, in my user group on the AVScience forum has gotten his to work with W7 without having to resort to XPmode, for the MyHD software cannot run in a VM, so as stated on the left column, when i do my next build, I can take my cues from the work that he has already done.
Not just the capture cards but the printers, video cards [love nVidia for keeping things backward compatible] and so on.

Re: the future of PCs Hmm - I don't have the market research.
Here is my gut feel:
1) Office environments (small business, SMEs, large Corps) will need PCs for a long time. Cost and ergonomics will dominate. For ergonomics you want a reasonable but not flash monitor and a keyboard that matches the human hand! As far as cost goes I think the argument is if it works why replace it unless it's close to its use by date. This is not that good for those who want to sell new hardware, OSs and applications.
2) Students I think meet the requirements of (1) with a bit more desire for things a bit newer. But if you are a serious student why would you want to be hunched over a laptop for a couple of hours a night. Do you really need to take it to class.
....1) & 2) = low growth.
3a) Then comes entertainment/personal use from disposable income. Low cost throw away tablets, never ending apps, good comms = high growth.
3b) The gaming market could provide continued growth in PCs. But then, I'm a non gamer type. Do you really need an MS OS for this down the track?

I think MS is targeting (3a) and they've missed the boat IMO.
