In any case as has been pointed out AD NAUSEAM both here and on W8 Forum too -- the OS on the computer has totally NOTHING to do with the drop in PC sales --I'm not going to re-hash the old reasons again - they are all here in the Forums if you want to re-visit that whole discussion.

So what are you saying - decent sized screens, keyboards and other I/O devices aren't important any more?
For the kid or adults sitting on the lounge mucking around with internet browsing, videos ....basically entertainment then tablets are probably great. They may even be great as a portable when traveling.
Would I use one for creating a professional report - no way.

I think you're right whs. For the most part there's probably three kinds of W8 desktop/laptop buyers out there, those who don't know what they're getting into, those who just need to buy something but can't afford the fruit company, and those who are standing in the return lines at Best Buy.

You better believe it! A friend who bought a new 8 laptop off of another friend who only wanted to dump it fast now asked about getting 7 or Vista on it since 8 wouldn't run the software or detect the devices for his security system. The tech at the company advised him to dump 8 since it was a quote "crap OS" and put 7 on since that will run well on both Vista and 7.

When MS boasts about 8 sales that certainly doesn't tell the full story of people soon wanting to do one thing which is dump 8 to go back to one of the two previous versions. In fact someone else I was talking to asked about adding in a second hard drive into a new HP ENY Slleekbook to run Vista on a drive he pulled out of an older model that went belly up not wanting 8 or to simply dual boot with Vista.

As you yourself know MS made a goober with 8 and we still find 7 taking the lead being the best OS MS came out with! And when going to look up 7 drivers for the recently new 8 laptop guess what? Toshiba drivers and updates are for what? 7 and 8 since they are using 7 drivers on 8! In fact on that brand new model line you can still get Vista drivers as well. No one wrote up drivers strictly for 8?

By the way I know where you got the pie chart from. Windows 8 edges to 3.84 percent share; still fails to spark

I think they expected the usual naive desktop users to simply grin and bear whatever they shove on the plate without question! "Well we kept XP going forever while Vista slumped a bit. We can toss them just about anything while we suit our own needs!"

The bulk of the MS assets however are not even with the OS but the office wares and corporate takers there. That's where the real money comes in from! They can care less if "Joe Smoe" wants a Start button or Orb!

Now for the downtrail of new pc sales the economy as well as how well hardwares have come along where the OS now has to play catch up with the hardwares people are no longer in such a rush to grab at the newer hardwares that fast. Most OEM as well as custom cases in the last few years alone handle the OS sides of things adequately compared to running Vista on a 256mb, 512mb Dell years back! The 2-3gb rec for the 64bit as well as 32bit is already reached with the 3-4gb typical PC and 6gb is common for the 64bit preinstalls.

Has Physical Address Extension been mentioned yet?
Using the /PAE switch in 32 bit systems from 2000Pro to W7 as allowed legacy hardware/software users to
go to 8GiB and arrange to their needs, though sometimes I'll use ram above 3.4 gigs for on-board hardware or ramdisks for swap and cache,etc. 2000 server can natively use 16gig. Though I noticed a server thread elsewhere.

If they are smart they will fall back to Win7 and celebrate the best OS ever for Desktop experience, while on a parallel track reintroducing Win8 as a touchscreen/tablet OS.

There is something jarring about business moving almost 100% from XP into Win7 yet MS pretending its being phased out and superceded by Win8. That bluster was understandable when they were trying to scare business into WIn8. But the productive business world voted for the desktop and Win7.

Add that to the consumer's tepid reaction to Win8 and you have the perfect opportunity for MS to finally recognize that with Win7 they created the best OS ever.

If they continue to refuse to acknowledge their aero-headed stepchild, we'll continue to provide it's support and advocacy.

There is a huge market for portables.

Makes sense for them to release an os for that. It appears to be ok for that.

There is also a huge existing user base for windows.

MS decided to force metro on them as well.

The aim for MS is clear . Metro ( most obviously the start screen ) is the way they push their services/products on the hapless user.

It is not just about selling apps. It is about their entire online /cloud services subscription plans, and the opportunity to push Bing, Xbox etc.

I think they misjudged the level of public resistance.

What they are now doing is hastening the decline in pcs , where they have dominance, leaving themselves fighting for 3rd place in tablets/phones.

In one sentence:

MS has had tablet versions all along being the embedded form of OS however and very limited with what you could do with the CE or Compact Editions of XP, Vista, CE 6.0 for 7, and now RT/8. The push to make the desktop look the same as the Surface now however is since they are now producing their own Tablets rather then simply offering an embedded form of Windows on someone else's!

Now for the Fruit Company, Googlatorium, and whoever Kindle or not IPads became a fad where everyone had to have the latest being a one time buy this year and then the next and simply download the apps you want. They become more like novelty items for people ion the go for fast texting and jibberish while not being suited for the serious user in any form.

And where does that lead everyone back to eventually? The actual need for a newer updated "desktop" OS not just the desktop edition of a tablet OS! The reason 7 was an instant success is quite simple. MS had to make it work right from the start after Vista got a bad rep being the misunderstood OS there!

MS pressured the OEMs to have driver support available for 7 like never seen before where you waited a year for select Vista drivers! With 8 when looking around you won't find 8 only drivers but instead of seeing Vista/7 they now list 7/8 drivers and updates still using 7 drivers!
