More Than 3 Out of 4 Enthusiasts Reject Windows 8

Status
Not open for further replies.
I don't believe their will be a SP-2 for Windows 7.
Microsoft doesn't want to make Windows 7 better. They want us to get up off Windows 7 and buy Windows 8.
Microsoft makes no money offering a new SP for Windows 7. They make money selling Windows 8.
With Windows 7 they can make good money too - there are still half of the PC owners on standby with XP. And then they may have to yield to the pressures from the PC manufacturers that are not selling much with Windows 8. If they insist on their mal-advised strategy, they may bring the whole industry down - and what then.

They will make more money selling Win7. Business is migrating into Win7. Consumers want Win7 on their new PC's.

It is their only wildly successful product - a perfect OS with a perfect desktop experience - and shows no signs of age except that it needs SP2.

Until then you can make your own using Update 7 installation media - Windows 7 Help Forums saving at least an hour during installs.

Read that, too much tinkering for me, my favourite is still 2000 Pro [no activation, integrated VL copy]
and with the modified NT5.1 kernels i was able to keep up when Mozilla and the rest went to VS2010+.
To maintain it was taking too much of my leisure time despite some smarter than me working their butts off
to keep 2000 alive and surrendered to XP, then got free W7U DVDs.

Folks I understand that Windows 7 is a great system.
I understand that business is going from XP to Windows 7 and yet some are still undecided until they see what Microsoft is going to do.
I understand that a SP-2 would be great and do many good things. I understand all the other good if not great things about Windows 7. My understanding is the market place has already spoken and it wants Windows 7.
I just don't think who ever is running the dog and pony show at Microsoft understands and or will admit to.
I think their will have to be some changes in who sits in the board room at Microsoft before we see what I think me, you and millions of others want. I don't hate Microsoft. I want Microsoft to continue to be a great company. I just think Microsoft should look in the past at billions of customers that made them so big and ask themselves; what do those customers want. Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying that Microsoft should not reach out to new markets at the same time. They are big and strong enough to do both.

Please be informed that I have been told I'm not using my brain so I could be completely wrong and probable am. Just my thoughts and are not intended to offend anybody in any way shape or form. Please inform me if my thoughts in this thread do offend anybody.

Thanks for that Link, I had missed all that activity with Windows 2000, probably my favorite operating system from Microsoft. I may take it out of it's virtual machine where it currently resides and give it a run on an old computer.

You have to eventually surmise just what the intentions are with MS as far as what is driving it. With ME XP another buggy OS was rushed in to replace it's predecessor in a heartbeat. Likewise 7 was the big MS comeback following the bad rep Vista took! Now to see Windows 9 or whatever sell 2-3yrs. after 8 you need to push the floppy first then people will be far more anxious to dump 8 for 9 or ??? that comes next. It's obvious that Blue(birds) won't be singing a cheerful tune either.

Jack there's nothing you could say that would offend me or most anyone here. Those who do the grunt work here know that nobody has our back like you. I think once again you summarize things well.

It's a marketing model that is failing: revamping the desktop - which MS does best - to try to monetize apps like Apple does on Ipad, transition over to subscription service for all software. But for desktop users it is not intuitive and doesn't work, just spoils the desktop experience which is at it's best in Win7.

It might work well on touchscreens but the blowback is so bad from putting it on desktops that it isn't even getting a fair hearing for the competitive advantage of live tiles vs. Ipad's static icons.

I see no alternative to putting WIn7 back on PC's until there is a worthy successor, while marketing Win8 for touchscreens where it belongs and can compete.

Microsoft is such a large company that the bureaucracy will never admit it made a mistake, they may change their short range goals but their long range goal is to reeducate (reprogram) the customer to its long range goal of maximizing the control (and profit) it makes on Windows. I wish they would open their eyes and realize that if they actually produced an OS the customers want they could regain their customers loyalty, increase sales and make customers realize their is a distinct difference between a tablet OS and a desktop OS. If Microsoft continues to offer a tablet OS for a desktop I feel many customers will ultimately say "why do I need a desktop?".

Microsoft only has to look here to see that many loyal supporters and users of Windows are disappointed with the Windows 8 UI.

If MS decides to from now on only produce Tablet suitable/capable versions desktop users simply won't be dumping their desktops and buy into tablets only but look at the alternatives for the desktop platform! MS would then be cutting it's own throat as far as customer loyalty as well as edging into the mobile market place since the bad rep for the bad desktop experience will flow downhill into the rep they get for all platforms! The "Ripple Effect" will be felt by the limited thinkers they seem to have!

Hi there
What exactly am I missing --and I'm a lowly Engineer so the hotshots at Ms who actually DESIGN and WRITE windows should be able to understand far better than me.

A DESKTOP OS is totally different in operation and conception from a MOBILE PHONE / TABLET OS -- so why on earth have Ms apparently given up on the desktop - desktops (probably in the form of laptops) aren't going away any time soon - there are 100,000's of scenarios where a tablet or phone isn't suitable.

It's just SO obvious that I really fail to understand what exactly Ms's problem is. Make the OS capable in of running in TWO user selectable modes. Can't be that difficult - after all people have added 3rd party stuff like Start 8 etc.

I have to surmise that it's really case of egos and politics.

Let's hope somebody starts teaching "Real world situations" to these guys.

Cheers
jimbo

Jimbo that is why I think it's a board room problem at Microsoft. I truly believe they have the quality personnel to make Windows 8 satisfy both markets. Permission to market such a operating system has to come from those at the top.
As you know and stated 3rd party programs are making Windows 8 more desktop/laptop friendly. I have to believe that the programmers and engineers at Microsoft could of done the same and better if they were allowed to.

Thanks for that Link, I had missed all that activity with Windows 2000, probably my favorite operating system from Microsoft. I may take it out of it's virtual machine where it currently resides and give it a run on an old computer.

Go to msfn if you want to access 4-8 gigs using the /PAE switch, more for the server versions and there is a thread there on running on modern equipment, which was already proved, including beyond two cores/processors. I may go back when I have a spare machine to fool around with.

Sounds reasonable! However, more likely senior management than Boardroom. The Board signs off on what they hope is reasonable advice. The senior managers are the ones pulling in the big $$ - figure that one out.

The senior managers are not the ones calling the shots as far as how the end product will look. They simply see that it is made to work once they are presented with the designs someone else came up with! "We want RT gui tablet gui on Windows 8! We want desktop to look just like tablet and Win phone! Make it happen or else!" daaaaaa...

Someone in the upper branches of the Microsoft tree, what ever title they have or someone wants to call them made the decision to have Windows 8 the way Windows 8 is.
The workers, the ones who actually create a operating system I don't believe make that decision.
I do believe the workers, the ones who put the rubber to the road can make a operating system just about anyway they are told to by the ones at the top of the corporate ladder, with in reason.
I do not know the corporate structure of Microsoft and don't want to know so I can't put a title to who/they ever made that decision.
All the bosses (what ever title they have) could just go to the proper department heads. Let them know that research has shown that are existing billion customers don't like about Windows 8. What would it take to make those billion existing customers happy so they will buy Windows 8. We don't want to loose sales to these people. Then the bosses could go down the hall to the Office program department. Folks the people who use Office ever working day are not happy at all with our new Office. What would it take to change it to make them happy. We don't want to loose sales to these people.
**
If I was the Microsoft corporation god I would not let someone mess with my product that would cause the loss of hundreds of millions of my current customers.
I want my current customers to see value in upgrading and new customer to see value for first time purchases.
I do not want to loose customers from my left hand just to add customers to my right hand. I want both hands full and growing.
Keeping old customers and adding new customers is the direction this company has and will continue to do business.

Advice or criticism will largely go unheeded. When the net (bottom line) starts shrinking heads will roll and the course will change.

Generally MS has various dept.s to begin with. When looking at the number of blogs for IE, and other things at TechNet or MSDN you get the general idea that each part of the OS has a separate team working on things and then a few others fitting the pieces together for the end product. The gui and theme area is a separate area where someone in charge was told to come up with something for Surface Tablet which they did. Someone who pieces the puzzle together was then told to take Surface and use that for the new 8 destkop releases as well. "We want everything to be looking exactly the same!" was a marketing decision when tossing Surface out and promoting it to take IPxxx and Andriodism. Since 7 was an instant success for the desktop MS with it's vast resources wasn't too worried about seeing a large volume of sales for the desktop but pushing tablets out! Can't buy Pro Plus on media only seen for 8 and 8 Pro editions? You know something is up when MS starts making those kinds of changes!
