As it says on the title. I'm wondering, what is the most powerful processor (and what maker and model would include them in a premade chassis if possible) I can get, that will be compatible with WIN7? I just found out that my Dell 7060 with an Intel i7-8700 6-core is an absolute no-go (which is a shame, I got it for $150, hoping it would work).

That's if you wanna build a desktop. If not you'll have to do research on those chipsets and sockets for OEM like Dell.

who told you that?

No Windows 7 drivers. https://www.dell.com/support/home/e...dos/optiplex-7060-desktop?ref=oscompatibility

So this is the highest socket with Windows 7 compatibility. i.e. The motherboard manufacturer supplies Windows 7 drivers. No hackery needed. LGA 2066 - Wikipedia

Did the research. You'll want the 7th Gen i7 Kaby Lake CPU in these. It seems Dell stopped supporting Windows 7 in 2017. Perhaps early 2017. Like quarter 1. The Intel Kaby Lake CPU was officially launched in January of 2017... So any Dell computer made in 2018 on up is a "no go." Unless of course you want hacked drivers and whatnot. Then it probably can be done.

Can you believe Intel is up to generation 13 already? Damn!

You always want the OEM power adapter. You go with some off brand crap and you risk a fire or destroying the computer. It's pretty much the same for laptop batteries unless you find a good reputable non OEM manufacturer...

I bought my parents one of these Optiplex's bare bones and stuck an NVMe drive in it and my old i5 6600K CPU and 16GB of RAM. Way over kill since they just surf the Internet and watch YouTube, but it will be future proof for a while I guess. I stuck Tiny 10 on it. LOL! Tiny 10 can be found at archive.org, but it needs an LTSC license key...

who told you that?

I wrote that post before you corrected me, and IRL issues kept me from editing and updating it last night. You have provided me with a possible way to make this work, and I'm getting to that right now. I apologise. When I got up this morning, I had response alerts on my phone from this thread.

Did the research. You'll want the 7th Gen i7 Kaby Lake CPU

So, boiling it down for ADD people: The absolute best you can get without magical trickery seems to be the i7-7700k quad-core 4.2ghz or an i7-7700 quad with 3.6ghz.

Fortunately, and with my most humble thanks, SIW2 has provided me, in another thread, a possible route to making a six-core processor function, from a Dell 7060.

Thank you for the responses, everyone.
