Mods - is it allowed to ask this on here?

Following on from discussions on another thread relating to random cursor jumping, I want to purchase a wireless mouse to use instead of my touchpad, and was wondering if people had views/suggestions on the best brand/models to go for, but I'm not sure if this sort of product discussion is allowed or considered appropriate on the site.

I use the same kind of mouse for both my notebook and my desktop machines (I detest touchpads!). My favorite wireless mouse is the Logitech M525 (the M505 was also a good one but is a bit harder to find). It's size falls between full sized desktop mice and the much smaller laptop sized mice. I find the M525 to be a good fit for my hand; full sized mice feel like boulders and laptop mice give my fingers cramps. Being able to use the same kind of mouse on both machines makes transitioning between mice a nonissue.

Dear Lady Fitzgerald,

Many thanks for the advice! I will put that on my shortlist for further investigation.

I have a Logitech M510 that I DON'T like. It's got a distinctive lag when moving. It's very hard to get the mouse lined up to what you want to click. I don't think I would buy that particular model again. Your mileage may vary.

It's fine for me. But I guess everyone has their own opinions. But I only use this mouse on my laptop, which I don't use often, which is why I may not think it is not good.bad. I just use a wired PS/2 optical mouse for my desktop because I like them slightly better.

Edit: Oops made a double negative.

Re: mouse

My Dell mouse that came with my computer started acting strange. Intermittent "grab" problems. I went shopping for a replacement and I have tried the following: Logitech 525 (I didn't like the free spinning scroll wheel) and a Microsoft Sculpt (it skipped a lot and jittery). I finally ended up with the Logitech 705 which had an adjustable middle button and just right ergonomics.

That just goes to show how different people have different tastes. I happen to like the free spinning scroll wheel (granted, the wheel click took a bit of getting used to). I recently temporarily used one of my old M505s with the conventional non free spinning scroll wheel and it felt and sounded like a tricycle front wheel with a stiff playing card stuck in the spokes.

Yeah. Maybe I just got a dud. It sure feels good in my hand, and I love where all the controls are and the feel of the wheel. I just can't deal with that lag when it moves. I was hoping it was just a setting I had wrong, but no go.

I think $40 is a reasonable price. I like the extra buttons. It is a lot easier to go forward or backward. No need to go to the back arrow. One of mine (the wired one) does not have these buttons. When I use that, I always get discombobulated.

I have bought three Logitech M310s and they are fine. Good control for fine tasks like Photoshop editing. The only thing to check is the smoothness of the scroll wheel. On some the scroll wheel can have a rough feel. This is why it's best to buy from a shop even if it is a few dollars more expensive and check the smoothness of the scroll wheel before you part with your money. Also my experience is that Logitech have very good customer service.

For the best mouse reliability a wired mouse may be your best option. I use a wired Logi G500 on my mian box, also MS 5000 wireless and a Logi Marathon Mouse M705 on other boxes, both have been very good mice. You can get interference between the wireless mouse and wifi with some of the lower cost mice.

Yes, $40 is reasonable, the link I posted to the older model I am using listed a price of $149!. I feel your discombobulation, same thing happens to me when I sit down in front of a Win8 machine. Nothing is where it should be.;)

I have the Logitech wireless M505, and it has just developed a double-click problem after about a year of use. It is the second such mouse to do that on me. I tried things like replace battery to no avail. Have gone back to the DELL supplied USB mouse. It is ok, but I prefer wireless. I'll take a look at some of the others mentioned above.

I'd be looking into warranty replacement. I had Trackman Wireless replaced under warranty when one of the switches failed. It was over 4 years old, the warranty was 5 years. Check the warranty on your mouse here:

Thanks for the warranty suggestion. I just submitted a ticket. As I said, the current mouse is the second one I've had which developed a double click problem. It was a warranty replacement for the first one. No harm in trying again:-}}

EDIT: I got a feed back letter from HP, with several suggestions for clearing the "double-click" problem. The first one was to remove batteries, then click 10 times, replace batteries, and reconnect. Sounds a little like clicking the red shoes -- but it does seem to have helped. I'll run with it for a while and see how it goes.

Update: despite trying all of their suggestions, the mouse still produced double clicks. After several rounds of discussion they agreed to replace the mouse. Since they no longer make a 505, they sent me a 510. Got it earlier this week and it is working fine.

It is worth mentioning that my wife's 505 is still working fine after about 3 years. I just use my mouse a lot more.
