Mouse behaving erractically

I have w7 home premium 64 bit on a 6month old pc with 1TB hard drive petitioned into 2. The mouse and keyboard are wireless.

Every now and then, the mouse does not respond correctly, it seems to be slow and be very jerky, making it hard to position accurately. This usually responds to periods when I think (judging by noise) the the disk seems to be working really hard. When the noise stops, mouse performance returns to normal. There does not seem to be any correlation with what program I am running and when this disk thrashing takes off.

It seems from other posts that the disk may be working because indexing is going on. Is this likely to effect mouse performance? Is there any reason not to turn indexing off if this is causing the problem? Can I set indexing to be done on demand, say at the end of the day?

A 6 month old PC should be doing very little indexing. There has to be something else going on.

Windows Update is a possibility as is a virus scan. Can you look at Task Manager / Processes tab and see what is using the most CPU when this happens? That may provide a clue.

I have looked at the processes but can't see anything going on. Often when this happens, only 1% of the CPU is in use.

Curious...it sounds like a hardware issue.

Are the batteries in the mouse fresh? Have you tried resetting the wireless connection between the mouse and its receiver? (Usually you press a button on both devices to do this.)

Have you tried relocating the wireless receiver? Don't have it too far away from the keyboard/mouse either - if it's not sitting on the desk next to the monitor (as an example), try putting it there.

Batteries are fresh. Have turned pc and mouse on and off several times. PC is under desk about 1.5m from mouse.
I have had no problem with the wireless keyboard, but maybe that wouldn't be as noticeable.
As I said, the only thing I can see is that the problem only occurs when the disk seems to be going flat out - and this can happens when I am not doing anything.

check round for other 2.4ghz devices, i.e. routers, phones ect.... All of them will effect and interfere with each other.

Jeepman I don't think there is any significant interference as there is no unusual activity, eg phone calls when the mouse starts behaving badly. These events occur irregularly and perhaps 6-10 times a day.

My Mouse and Keyboard act up several times a day as well, but mine happen when my router(2.4channel) is being used by my old wireless G laptop or my xbox360. Quite frankly I chalk it up to a cheap Keyboard and Mouse. (in my case)

Have you checked the laser on the bottom? Is it clean and unobstructed? Also, try a different mousepad or surface with the mouse, any change?

I know that most optical mice need a surface that has several colors, or a design of some type to detect the movement.
