Mouse cursor showing but now responding to clicking

My Asus laptop has an intermittent problem where the mouse curser will appear to be fine however when I click on things such as the task bar, exit or minimise buttons it will not do anything, the only way I can use the computer to get into things is by using the keyboard. This happens with both a usb and mouse touchpad. I have done a virus scan and nothing has shown up as well as checking the drivers for both the usb mouse and the touchpad mouse both are updated. It seems to have happened after a windows update. Restarting does fix it sometimes however not all the time.
How do I fix this?

Hi Dayna, Welcome to Seven forums.

Click on start and type eventvwr.msc. Look for errors, ones with red X with them for freeze issues.
