Folks:

My original PC was equipped with Vista-32, and upgraded it to Seven-32. Now I am thinking of moving to Eight-32/64 onto a new PC but utilizing the cheaper Eight upgrade. Can it be done?

The steps I think I need to perform are as follows:

Eight-32

  1. Run the sysprep utility.
  2. Install the hard drive into the new PC.
  3. Re-activate the Seven-32
  4. Run the Eight Upgrade.
Eight-64

  1. Run the sysprep utility.
  2. Install the upgrade to Seven-64 once on the new PC.
  3. Install the upgrade to Seven-64 again.
  4. Activate the Seven-64.
  5. Run the Eight Upgrade.
Of course, I probably have to re-install my applications again. What do you all think? Will it work?

In theory , it should work.

Upgrade installs don't always go so well.

1. Run the sysprep utility.
2. Install the upgrade to Seven-64 once on the new PC.
3. Install the upgrade to Seven-64 again.
4. Activate the Seven-64.
5. Run the Eight Upgrade.

What is the syprep for? You can just install 7 from the dvd.

I haven't tested, but you might not need to bother with 3 and 4

For Step 5, you might better booting the 8 dvd and clean installing.

Doesn't sysprep deactivates the Seven installation and steps 3 & 4 re-activates the Seven-64 on the new PC?

You are absolutely right. I have many software installed on the Seven-32 PC from, I hate to lose them. I might have to give it some more thought before moving to Eight-32/64!:)

How can I run the Eight-64 upgrade application on a Seven-32 PC? Don't I have to upgrade the new PC to Seven-64, before and Eight-64 upgrade?

You can install by booting the dvd.

You don't need to do an in place upgrade- therefore you don't need the same bit version to install.

Confusingly, you do need a 64 bit os version to get the 64 download .

Once you have downloaded it - then you can install on a machine running a qualifying 32 bit os.

More oddly, you cab even use the 8wdp, 8wcp, or 8rp.

Make sure you’re on the PC you want to upgrade. This must be a PC that is currently running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3), Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows Developer Preview.

Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key - Microsoft Windows
