My system drive is a 120Gb SSD. This is rapidly filling up but I have in excess of 2.5 Tb on 3 other drives. I'm migrating as many program files as I can to one of the other drives and relocating other stuff to free up as much as I can. I know that MSOCache holds install files from the office CD and that those of us that bought the diskless version of Office 2010 should keep these files around "just in case". So. my question is...Can I safely move the MSOCache directory to a storage drive and still be able to use it "just in case"?
Suggestions & comments welcome,
Thx,
Dusty

There is a way to move these files. However, it involves manually editing the registry. From memory, there are about 40 - 50 entries that need to be modified.

There is a tool around called "listool". This was designed for Office 2003, and AFAIK it doesn't work for Office 2010, but you might want to check it out... Local Install Source (Msocache)

This is a comment by Brian Tillman, an Office MVP.. "Starting with Office 2007, the location of the cache became immovable. See these: Description of the Local Install Source feature in 2007 Office programs and Setup architecture overview for the 2007 Office system."

For non-technical users this is true. The process is risky. You can mess up your office installation if you miss registry keys or change the wrong ones.

Thanks Tanya,
I have no fear editing registry entries, been doing it since "way back when". I just don't think the space I can free up is worth all the coffee required to edit 50 +/- entries (or the headache). Thanks for the response, I 'preciate it.

I know what you mean. I did it a couple of times, then came to the same conclusion - it just isn't worth the effort.

Good Luck with your space hunting.
