Mozilla Introduces Firefox 29 the Most Customizable Ever

This is a promising version of FireFox. Some of my extensions don't play well, none the less I like the update better then the past three updates.

One more annoyance- clicking a link that opens a new window gives you a window that isn't maximized. I've found no option so far to change this behavior.
I've noticed this too. From what I've seen in various places, this is counted as a bug on the Mozilla forums.

Sad fact is, this bug has been present for a long time. At least version 21, and I know it was there earlier than that. They've known about it for asome time now, and haven't tried to fix it.

Regarding the UI. Mozilla took the UI from FireFox for Windows8 which never came out of beta and instead went straight to the grave and implemented it into FireFox 29 which was a smart, IMO. Although I'm still trying to adjust the UI to my flavor

I have two problems.

1. I have lost the link preview (when you mouse over a link you can part of the page address) from the bottom task bar. And I do not see it in the top right hand corner.

2. Although I have Menu Bar turned off, and Title Bar off in the Customize options, I still have the space it takes active.
See the photo, the space between the Firefox menu button and the search windos should be gone, or at least it was in the previous version, but in stead it's like that all the way across.

Well I like it so far, what exactly is the problem? The looks? does it work in some way that upsets you?

It works fine for me, and my missus loves it, what she knows or cares about computers does not go past the shopping, outings and activities and email. Has very little computer knowledge but took to FF 29 right away.

Horses for courses, what are the technical objections?

I didn't try it because I don't like how it looks. I don't like yellow cars either so I won't buy one.

Of course this doesn't mean anything with regard to the technical operations of FireFox or a yellow car.

I tried FF 29 and went back to FF 28.
To much tinkering for me. Never did figure out how to get the back and forward arrows to the left instead of in the middle.
Took two days to find the update page button.
I don't need the hassle.

This version actually got me to switch from Chrome. I still like Chrome but FF is simply passing them by. Maybe Google has too much going on and FireFox can focus more on their browser? I don't know. But the layout of 28 and prior always made me stick with Chrome. The developer tools for FF put it over the top.

FWIW, this new Firefox loads faster than the old: 1 second (one-thousand-one) vs. 2.5 seconds.

Of course Google Chrome loads almost instantly, so fast the screen sizzles.

I loaded it in one of my W7 VMs (I created a snapshot before installing).

I played with it for about 10 minutes and then I rolled back my VM.

The Classic Theme Restorer add-on is pretty nice and works for me, though it did take me a while to sort out how to set up FF the way I want it.

FF shouldn't need an add-on though. This kind of customizability (to layouts that were in previous versions of FF) should be built in to begin with in my opinion.

At any rate, at least FF 29 is working well for me now.

...

Make that: 29.0.1

I wasn't sure what to make of the newest iteration of Firefox, especially the new Australis engine/user interface (UI), but it has been a week now and I saw that 29 already has an update to 29.0.1, so I thought oh what the heck go for it.

If you knew me better you could put me into the "I dislike change" category but, as with all things new it just takes a while to figure out where everything is or what has been replaced or removed, it took me about a half hour to tweak it, and check to see if my Tools/Options were set to my preference. All in all I like this new version its cleaner looking and quicker. It also cleared up some minor irritations in displaying pages here at SevenForums and other sites that I visit.

Most of you may have already checked but I found some guidance here: Mozilla Firefox | mozillaZine Forums

I still find that Firefox will not work properly on some sites, including this one. I have to use IE for this site. I like the new FF, but I was really hoping that they would resolve this problem that has been bugging me since FF 24.

It's still my browser of choice, though.

Speaking of corrupted profiles, I've had a few in my Firefox life! I'd like to recommend an extension for quick, handy profile backups. It's called FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension). I've been using this for years without problems. You can backup your whole profile, among other things, with one click of a toolbar button. Restores are a snap too.

There is also a free program available called MozBackup. It's good, but I prefer FEBE because it's so quick & simple, at least for me.

As I described in another Firefox thread, you don't have to be beholden to an extension to back up Firefox profiles:

Speaking about Firefox itself, I back up:

AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles.ini

I have three profiles in the Profiles folder, and besides doing this for backup, I can copy them along with the .ini file to duplicate my environment on other machines. I guess if I ever wanted to selectively restore pieces of a profile, I could restore a backup profile to a VM and extract it from there using whatever means there are for that, maybe involving an extension like the one you posted. However, I don't see any reason to use an extension all the time for backup/restore. Copying the profile folder and .ini file does it all for my bookmarks and extensive organization in the sidebar and toolbar, other customizations, history, cookies, saved passwords, and the extensions I use, which include Tabmix Plus, All-In-One-Sidebar, Noscript, Adblock Plus, Video DownloadHelper, GreaseMonkey, and in one profile, Classic Theme Restorer.
