When using Win Explorer to view my music folders I notice that many of the names under "Contributing Artist" are missing even though when I play the file in say Winamp it shows correctly under "Artist". Hence, the information is somewhere. Where can I find it under the columns. I've checked "Album Artist" and "composers" but not there. It's a real pain in the ****! I'm tagging the files using mp3tag.
Even though I'm a relative newcomer here, I'll welcome you to SevenForums.
I've run in to much the same problem recently, trying to get my mp3 collection "up to snuff" and acceptable to Windows Media Player.
What I've found is that an older piece of software called Id3-TAGIT will show you both version 1 and version 2 of the id3 tags (an mp3 can have both at the same time). It will also convert version 2.4 (WMP incompatible) to version 2.3 (WMP compatible).
The "Contributing Artist" in WMP equals to "Track Artist" in MP3tag, so that's what you need to add to your files
Also, Winamp will always use Album Artist tag for displaying items in the Playlist Editor when the Track Artist tag is missing (and if I'm not mistaken, vice versa).
