mp3ext problem

Hi All

i'm have trouble gettng mp3ext to work in win7 home premium. if you open a folder with mp3's in it with like goldwave program it will show the icon 320. but if i just open a mp3 folder with mp3's in there it show the winamp icon. i would like to use the mp3ext shell to edit my files, does anyone know what i can do to get mp3ext shell to show 320 icon and edit my files please? it work fine when i was running win 7rc.

Hi There, I stumbled across this and found a solution to the problem

You will have to install mp3ext first, i know the icons don't show up instantly but this is what you do to get them.

go to windows Explorer, go to any mp3 file and right click on it then click properties

There should be an mp3-info tab click in that

now theres a "config" button, click on that
that brings up the mp3ext properties
click on icons tab
select theme in the drop down box mp3ext
click OK, you should have the mp3ext icons on your mp3 files..

I have Windows 7 Professional x64 and I can't get MP3ext to install at all. It seems to install fine, but I don't get the info tooltip, the custom icons or the extra MP3 tab in the explorer properties window. About the only thing that it definitely did is make all of my MP3 files show up with "blank" icons, which won't go back to normal even after uninstalling MP3ext!

Damo, did you do anything special to get MP3ext to install and work properly in Windows 7? Are you using the 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 7? Do you think that makes a difference?

I Have Windows 7 Professional (32 bit)
as far as I know, mp3ext is only a 32 bit application and will not work in a 64 bit OS

I thought i had it working before but then it went back to the winamp icon but this time i fixed it for good

You have to be sure that the file association icon is NOT set on winamp and it's set to nothing

then you open windows Explorer and right click on any mp3 file, click properties

there should be the info tab click on that then click config
uncheck force writing ID3 track field and "disable iconhandler"

make sure that "add mp3ext to current extensions" is clicked then go to
the icons tab and select "mp3ext <3.3.19" click Apply

that should work

My problem is that no matter how I install MP3ext, I don't get that info tab in the MP3 properties window. I've used MP3ext for over seven years, so I'm familiar with the various settings. I just can't get it to install properly! It's very frustrating! I've emailed the author, but I don't expect I'll hear anything.

As I understand it, the 64 bit version of Windows can run 32 bit or 64 bit programs. If I install a 32 bit program, it installs to a special "Program Files (x86)" directory. I have several 32 bit programs installed that work fine.

I've tried installing MP3ext in Windows XP SP3 Compatibility Mode and have also tried Running as Administrator during installation. No luck. I don't get the MP3 Info tab, the pop-up tooltips or the special icons. As I mentioned, now I can't get MP3 files to show any icon. They are just blank, even though MP3 files are associated with Windows Media Player 12. The icons for any of the other audio and video formats (ogg or MKV for example) are fine, but MP3 files are now borked.

I was hoping you did something special to make MP3ext work with Windows 7...

Hi kevin,

It's a shame you've tried almost every possible way and not gotten any good results from it.
perhaps you could try and install Winamp and install that as normal but later on try disassociating the mp3 file extension from winamp then apply those changes through mp3ext... I'm pretty sure that's how it worked for me.. it took quite a bit of mucking around.
perhaps even try a "double install" of mp3ext...
Perhaps also you could disassociate ".mp3" from WMP, I've never liked WMP at all.
or Maybe also you could find the correct registry setting for mp3 file icons... I've never had to touch the registry myself tho.
Its certainly working correctly for me now, i still have the bitrate icons on each mp3 file the way it was in XP

I wish you luck in getting those mp3ext icons back. Don't give up.

MP3ext definitely causes problems with Windows 7 x64. I installed Winamp and was able to get the Winamp icons to show, but when I tried installing MP3ext again, the icons went blank again. Here's the crazy part, after I uninstalled MP3ext, the icons remained blank. I ran CCleaner and then deleted every reference to MP3ext in the registry. No go, mp3 icons still blank. I even tried uninstalling and then reinstalling Winamp. No luck. The only way I could get the Winamp icons back was to do a system restore!

BTW, I did get an email from the developer Michael Mutschler and it confirms the problems with 64-bit Windows:

Hi Kevin,

Since I do not use MP3 anymore, I really abandoned my extension. It will not work on 64-bit systems. It is not possible, since a 64-bit program (which the explorer is) cannot load 32-bit DLLs. You cannot mix those DLLs inside a single process. To get it working, you need to recompile it for 64-bit.

Bad news for folks like me running the 64-bit version of Windows, but at least now we know. The sources are still available on the MP3ext website, so maybe someone down the road will attempt to recompile it for 64-bit...

I guess we should thank Mr Mutschler for declaring it public domain and making the source available.
That enabled someone to make it a project on SourceForge.

If you Browse All Files there, the 3.4.23 file is the same as the V3.4b23 version available from the author's original www.mutschler.de/mp3ext/download.html page.

The mp3ext_3.4.24 file was the first one compiled for 32 and 64 bit, and
the mp3ext_3.4.25 file there (which is the one you get by clicking the green Download button on the 'project on SourceForge' page) has been tweaked for support of more players.

As usual, the modified source is available using the subversion client of your choice:
sourceforge.net/p/mp3ext/svn/14/tree/
though I believe you have to 'join' the project for check-in permission.

Anyway... I've installed 3.4.25 on a couple Win7 x64 computers, and have not had any problems with it, so far.

I'll save my complaints about the slug MS calls Media Center for another thread.

Thanks for the update, Darr247! I had sort of given up hope on mp3ext coming to Win7 x64. I had no idea that someone had set it up as a project on SourceForge and updated it. Excellent!

I just installed it and it works fine. Man, I'm so psyched to have mp3ext back! Thanks again for taking the time to let us all know about the update!

Thanks a lot for letting us know that there is hope with mp3ext on win7 x64. Just installed the 3.4.25 version and works great!!! I really missed this valuable app when i abandoned win xp. Once again thanks for the info!
