MPC - volume slides down itself

Since a day ago I've been getting this weird problem with media player classic. The volume continues to slide down to 0 by itself. Even when I click on it and drag it up and hold the mouse it slides down by itself to 0. This only applies to when I use media player classic (home cinema edition). Is this the cause of some virus?

Also at the same time I've been having another problem with windows 7. When I minimize windows of the same category i.e doc windows and AIM windows, these would normally fall under one icon and will have that window pop up when you hover over it to see the multiple windows. Now it continues to blink when I do so, and when it does stop blinking I won't be able to open anything when I click on the windows. I can only reopen minimized windows by itself (such as only having internet explorer window open).

Has anyone experienced the same thing or know of a way to fix it?


I forgot to mention that since these problems started my master volume is always set at 0 when i start up my computer. Also sometimes it does slide down similar to mpc but not all the time.

Have not seen or heard of this - but as it's only started a day ago - this would be an ideal candidate to perform a system restore to a time before the issue started.

When performing the restore the system will normally provide details of any applications that will be un-installed / changed by the restore. If you notice something here you can cancel the restore and manually remove the item, If nothing is obvious the restore should fix the issue

Unfortunately I never set up system restore points, so now when I tried there was no point to refer to. I also ran virus scans and spyware scans but nothing comes up. Not exactly sure how I can pinpoint this problem. I've also tried reinstalling windows 7 (did it via upgrade since I originally upgraded from vista) and it still gives me the same problem with the volume sliding down and having multiple minimized windows not opening.

Right now I have no clue how to fix it. I've uninstalled all my codecs and downloaded another mpc to try and use but the volume still slides down. It only applies to mpc which is weird, but mpc is my favorite player so I would like to stick with it if possible. I've tried unplugging my mouse and keyboard to see if volume keys were being pressed without knowing but that doesn't seem to be the case. I have no clue whats causing all this, as this problem showed up along side with my minimized windows working incorrectly too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, its driving me crazy not being able to minimize windows or use mpc.

The only thing I can think of - and this should not have any effect on the volume slider - check the properties of your default playback device and see if you have a communications tab - if so make sure that this muting option is off - only thing I can think of that may adjust volume.

Have you tried rebooting? This sounds like the kind of behavior that might be cured by a reboot, if you haven't tried that already.

Too bad about not having enabled system restore. It is such a simple but frequently effective way to fix problems such as this.

Otherwise, you might consider trying a repair install of W7. This leaves programs, data and most settings intact.

i have the exact problem with MPC volume sliding down to zero by itself. i found a post somewhere sometime ago (unfortunately i can't find it again) how to fix it. i'm finding the solution now so i can fix it too.

apparently that post was saying it's the way Win7 automatically adjust the volume when the bluetooth device (phone) is active. And i find it to be true as i've tried it several times.. once i use my mobile phone (which is connected via bluetooth), the MPC and sysmte volume started acting weird.

the problem? the auto volume adjust got "stuck" even after i hang up the phone. so i got to reboot.

if anyone has found a solution... would like to hear how to disable auto-volume adjust.

right click on the speaker icon and select playback devices - you should have a communications tab which allows you to set the options.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I think I've narrowed down the problem a little bit. I tried all the suggestions above and none of them worked for me, so I got tired of this and just reformatted my computer. It worked fine for a day after I updated all my drivers, but then the problems came back again.

I've managed to fix the alt tab problem by changing back to the xp look when it alt tabs, but the thumbnail preview flashing (causing me to not be able to click on the minimized icons on the taskbar) and the mpc volume sliding is still there. I ran selective boot with all the services disabled, and all these problems went away.

Is there any clue which service would be causing these problems?


And I forgot to mention, the mpc sliding problem only happens when I'm actually select mpc. If I run it and click on somewhere else the volume won't move. It's only when its selected that it does this.

Well I've found out the thing thats been making the volume slide down through trial and error, once I turn off the human interface device access the problem stops. Anyone know why this is the cause or if this service is really necessary?

The HID driver/service is related to Keyboards and mice so as long you're not seeing any lost functionality there it should be OK to run without it.

I would advise that rather than disable it you set the service to manual start just in case something you add later requires it - if you then have the issue again you will at least know where to start.

If you disable the service completely if you add new hardware in the future that requires the service it will not work and possibly not report the reason.

As for why this is happening on your system it could be some incompatibility with the HID service and the actual mouse and/or keyboard in use. I would look out for upgrades to these and retest when they are available
