Hi all,

i have a basic question about ms 2007 and ms 2010. Now, i am using 2007 version of office, but also i am wondering which version is better for just writing acedemic papers and powerpoint as well as excel, 2007 or 2010 version of office? Also, except ms office, i am open to any recommendation of programs which is developed to write better academic papers.

Thanks...

I prefer Office 2010 over Office 2007 for all modules.

That said, writing academic papers is multi-stage process but a lot is based on the institution and your advisors. For Masters/PHD thesis work, most candidates hire out the final version for submission. The tool you use is more a question of what are you comfortable using and what file format is required?

I recommend the first step (after deciding the subject and beginning research) to be JUST WRITE...as in just write without any attention to format. You could use Notepad or Wordpad if you want but Word is preferred.

The only format elements you need at this stage are:

  • Normal style
  • Paragraph breaks
  • Bullets
  • Numbered list
  • Foot notes/references
  • Page break (for new chapters/sections)

JUST WRITE and leave all the rest of the formatting to the end...such as:

  • Font and styles
  • Page numbering
  • Chapter /subchapter heading
  • Indents
  • Sub lists
  • Figure captions
  • Table captions
  • Margins
Best of luck with your studies!

IMO, Office 20010 is much better than 2007. Much in the same was as if you compared Vista and Windows 7. No one really likes Vista that much, but they love Windows 7.

2010 because it has some great new edit features along with the fact you can get it in 64 bit format. The 64 bit is much smoother and a heck of a lot faster (especially when working with large documents).

I would agree, 2010 is superior for many small and subtle reasons.
In terms of writing academic papers, it depends on faculty, but the APA style is good and many other faculties use this style. Like the person above said though, the content is more important than formatting. Get the content down and then worry about formatting.
Good luck with your studies.

Thanks for all replies, and so sorry for my late reply. After your recommendation, i have installed office 2010 X64, but i have a problem about mathtype 6.7. before this product, i have been using office 2007 and mathtype was integrated. when i have tried to integrate it to office 2010, i got an error message. Anyone know how to integrate? Now, i am using mathtype as macro.

Here is the error:

Yep, i have just seen it before your reply :) mathtype is not compatible with office 2010 yet. So it is better to wait for new version of mathtype...

thanks in advance.

One other point, Office 2010 x64 will not interface with many 32 bit addons.
For that reason, Microsoft does not recommend installing it unless you have specific needs.
From Microsofts Office 2010 FAQ's

"Yes, Office 2010 products are available in 64-bit versions; however, for the best productivity and user experience, Microsoft recommends 32-bit Office 2010 for both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. Office 64-bit is optimized for advanced data analysis scenarios that most users don’t require, and existing 32-bit add-ins are not supported on Office 64-bit."

I also think Office 2007 would be fine for the uses you listed. Just my opinion.

ıt is alittle bit late now. I have already installed office x64 and i just use MathType add-ons to write mathematical formulas. For excel, sometimes i need to add more data, so i chosed office x64. Now, i will use it for a while and if having a problem, i can uninstall to install x86.

Thanks for help.
