Analysis: Microsoft could cut Windows 7 list price to $100

I think they should seriously consider selling for lower than usual. They have to erase the reputation that Vista has brought upon them. From the public's perspective, Vista was very expensive for what they saw as minor changes from XP.

Windows 7 Home Vista huh? I wonder what ther version will feature.

Because Microsoft declined to cut the U.S. prices of Vista Business or Vista Business Upgrade, however, relying on the 2008 decreases means that, by Computerworld's calculations, Windows 7 Professional would remain at $300 and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade at $200. That's unlikely, given that those numbers would price Professional higher than Ultimate.

Not good for businesses then.....

The June 26 start date for Best Buy's promotion is also the date when the Windows 7 Upgrade Option will kick off. That separate marketing campaign will provide free or discounted upgrades to Windows 7 for people who purchase a Vista-powered PC between June 26 and Jan. 31, 2010, according to TechARP, a Web site that has repeatedly accurately called Microsoft future plans.

Thats good to know, though it doesn't apply to me.

Another tack that Microsoft could take would be to simply cut prices for all editions by the same percentage, thereby lowering prices while still keeping its tier structure intact. In a scenario where the company cuts prices 10% from the current Vista list, for example, Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade would list at $117, while Professional Upgrade and Ultimate Upgrade would be priced at $180 and $198, respectively.
A 20% across-the-board cut would put Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade at $104, with Professional Upgrade and Ultimate Upgrade at $160 and $176, respectively.

Microsoft has been taking in a lot of consumer advice lately (I've noticed via twitter)so I do have some raised expectations with this.

2009 is has been the best year IMHO with Windows software...

Hi there
Any commercial organisation is answerable whether we like it or not to its shareholders - WITHIN the framework of the law of course.

Since most of us also have a vested interest in ensuring these companies do remain profitable - - we need JOBS, PENSIONS etc whilst central governments need money for welfare and other public services its not in any of our interests to ensure the product is sold at a loss.

The difference between "reasonable profit" and "corporate greed" is of course a mute point - and this is where in decent democracies the different political parties decide what is what and "peddle their wares" to their own electorates.

Whilst some of the crazy fiasco's coming out of MS lately -- the technet free subscription event recently to name just one and the almost weekly leaks of builds in progress is another on the whole MS is an intelligent and reasonably well run company who aren't stupid by any means.

Prices will be consistent with their business objectives and targets - also within the current economic climate.

However whatever they charge you can always ensure that STREET PRICES will be heavily discounted -- I don't think there's a product on this planet where you have to pay the "Manufacturers List Price" -- so you'll be able to get at least 25 - 40% off by a bit of research

(And of course for around 247 USD with a 20% PROMO discount you could always get a technet subscription which will entitle you to W7 Ultimate plus a lot of other decent software at NO EXTRA CHARGE).
