Microsoft kills off Skype for Windows touch app in favor of desktop version

Microsoft is simplifying Skype for Windows into a single application. While the software giant has offered a touch-friendly Skype app for Windows 8 and a separate desktop app for Windows 7 and Windows 8 PCs, Microsoft is removing the finger-friendly version in favor of the traditional PC app. Any users of the Windows 8 specific version of Skype will be pushed towards the desktop version starting July 7th. "We’re updating PC users of the Windows modern application to the Windows desktop application, and retiring the modern application," explains Skype’s Aga Guzik. "With the upcoming release of Windows 10 for PCs, it makes sense to use the Skype application optimized for mouse and keyboards use, capable of doing touch as well rather than 2 separate applications performing the same function."

And the three people using Windows Mobile will all be thrilled. Meanwhile in the real world we are all happily ignoring Windows 10 and sticking with Windows 7. They have deprecated so much stuff in Windows Ten it is not funny. I suspect Microsoft will be selling us the rest of the OS in add on packs.

Hi there

Have you actually TRIED these applications yet - Windows phone is more popular than you think and WHAT APPLICATIONS and DEVICES have you found that really doesn't work on W10 that works on W7 - apart from the odd driver which will be fixed soon enough.

Have you actually tried the latest W10 build - build 10130 yet -- on 4 machines I'm testing this on only 1 scanner and a SAP GUI and DB application don't work -- SAP because it's a HUGE complex piece of software - most people won't have this on a HOME PC -- corporate Virtual desktop infrastructure or a VPN will fix that problem and my scanner is an old one using TWAIN which is no longer supported. I use this on a W7 VM - no problems there.

W10 works fast, efficiently, supports Touch decently for those that need it and works a lot better for things like remote streaming Video from servers to TV's / android phones etc etc and integrates nicely with the latest mobile devices.

Nothing wrong with W7 but I prefer the BETTER security in W10, the more flexible approach to integration with Touch and mobile devices and the general performance improvements overall - especially better memory management and able to take advantage of the newer CPU's..

Just my take on this - but W10 is actually gaining quite good traction -- and there will be another release or two to test before final on July 25 (and of course you can update for FREE if you want).

Cheers

Am regularly evaluating it, good hardware no doubt, some things takes it off the shopping list, like both my banks (one major European, one major Scandinavian) have dropped any app support. Am reading US banks do the same, situations that are not reconforting for the Windows phone future. MS needs to work hard to somehow fix such negative tendencies.

Hi there

Banks DO need to get their acts together -- Again a well known BIG U.K Bank has apologized to customers that payments have "Gone Missing" (RBS Bank) due to I.T failures. Seems to be regular occurrence - so much so I use DUTCH Banks when I'm in the UK -- a lot better.

The arrogance of these Banks is that if you are say stuck at a Gas station or Hotel checkout where you can't access YOUR OWN MONEY they don't even try and help you AT all. There is usually some Indian or other Off shored worker who just mouths the same sentence over and over again saying "There's nothing we can do until the I.T systems have been fixed".

All these Off shored I.T activities should IMO carry a very heavy TAX penalty until they get stuff right.

If they make errors with simple payments then support for Windows phones is likely to be long delayed (unless Ms starts its OWN Bank --probably would make a much more successful job of it too!!).

RBS Fails its customers AGAIN !!!

RBS payment failure could last days - BBC News

Cheers

Try installing a TV card and see how W10 works much less an IR transmitter or reciever. And don't bother looking for Media Center to watch/record a TV program because WMC not there. Oh sure, there's streaming apps to watch a few canned programs but try to record it. I don't want streaming ANYTHING. I can barely view YouTube now without pauses.
