Hi. I recently tried to created a word document but as soon as I opened the window i got an error saying that microsoft office was not activated and that certain features were disabled.

The activation window contained two options: activate over the phone or activated over the internet. Both options return with the same error saying my copy is not valid.

I called Microsoft Support and they redirected me to omnitech support. the tech told me that I had downloaded malware and that he would be happy to fix my problem for 79.99. He would not actually tell me what was wrong.

I know that my copy is genuine because i bought this computer from a friend and i saw him install windows 7 home premium.

Is there anymore information i need to share?

I'm not an experienced user so if you could break it down barney style I would appreciate it.

Welcome Barney ;)

Just because you saw your friend install win7 not does make Word valid as it is a part of MS Office. That needs a seperate install & a Key Code.

You could download Open Office (Freeware) if you do not want to purchase MS Office.

Hi vekpos

I agree with what DocBrown says, just because the windows 7 is legit dosent mean that the office suite is, my guess is that microsoft has banned that product key. Your best bet is to either buy microsoft office or like what docbrown said and download open office a free opensource ms office like suite.

Here is a link to the OpenOffice download page: Download OpenOffice. I highly recommend it. It is compatible with MS Office formats, and has an interface very similar to MS Office 2003.

Compatible with most MS Office formats but not all its features particularly the newer ones in Office 2010.

Well, I haven't had all that much experience with Office 2010, but I assume much of this is when using .docx and other newer formats, correct?

OpenOffice and Libreoffice both sort of support docx but not very completely. They both support an "open" docx specification which is similar enough to offer some compatibility.

Yes. I've not looked at the specs but I think the open docx is a subset of the ms docx, which being a proprietary spec ms is free to modify as it chooses.

Yes, things would be so much simpler if more people used ODF as opposed to a prepriatery format.

Simpler but ms has to have a competitive edge somewhere otherwise no one would pay their prices.

True, many times the logical thing isn't the profitable thing. But I guess that's just the way it has to be.
