MS Secuirty essentials fails to protect agianst trojan

Whewn I was having to rebuild m pc I was advised by several members that MS security Essentials was all that I needed as effective antivirus protection. I have recently come back form holiday to discover a number of my online accounts have been hacked e.g. ebay,paypal. I immediately ran a full scan with MSSE and it found nothing of interest. Having changed all my passwords I found I was still being hacked so downloaded spybot which told me a had a trojan win32.pavelo. I removed this and ran malwalrebytes as well which said I had a trojan rundll32 in some registry key. I also removed this.

My question is whethee MSSE is really good enough as firstly didnt prevent the infction and secondly didn't find it on a full scan? Or is it that MSSe isn't designed to detect this kind of think and someother defence is required?

MSSE will not protect against the newer strains of the Fake Alert Viruses and neither will Malwarebytes find them. I used to think that MSSE was enough for my system but after seeing my clients spend thousands of dollars on removal I have to say that the only anti virus system that I trust is Norton.

Digging a little deeper at the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, MSE does provide protection against trojans but not necessarily all of them (especially the newest malware that may be a few hours old.) No anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time or we'd all be using it.

Was your machine left on and were you logged in to your various accounts thus leaving yourself exposed to hackers? Other than having MSE installed, what other measures did you take before you left on holiday to secure your machine? Did other people have access to your computer?

my pc was left on as I run some daily batch files to collect data. No I wasn't logged into an yo f the websites. My pc is on a wired LAN and my woreless is both locked to a list of MAC addresses and has password security. Prety sure I picked up the trojan going to a dodgy website when looking for some software. i apprecaite nothing is 100% proof, but just wondered if MSSE was designed to pick this stuff up and I was unlucky. Woudl I have bene any better protected if I had install Kapersky for which I have a licence ?

I am now running spybot as a background application, but not sure if that is an imporement?

Microsoft Security Essentials is your typical free AV and malicious software tool. It provides decent protection against many online risks and is suitable for those who require a small/medium amount of protection.

For example, I'm rather careful with what I do online. I don't use Internet explorer, I don't search for pirated software, cd keys, key generators, adult sites, movies, music, peer to peer sites, etc. I never click on links that people send me from facebook. I don't sign up for the facebook applications or games. I don't click on links from email. I use Spyware Blaster on a regular basis and occasionally search with malwarebytes. If I ever "have" to search for something that I find questionable, I fire up sandboxie and do it from there.

So, for me, I simply think spending money on Norton, Kapersky, Eset, etc would all be a waste of money. Would it give me more protection? yes. Would it protect me against more things? Yes. Would it necessarily stop anything from hitting my system? Maybe/Maybe Not.

What I always tell people is that if you are the type of person whose gotten hit with viruses and malware before, they by all means just invest the $20-$50 a year into a security package to keep more of the bad stuff away.

And remember. If there was a SINGLE application that was effective at stopping 100% of everything out there...that is what WE ALL WOULD BE USING. Everything is going to miss something.
