MS Word Undo button settings

I'm having trouble making the undo button work on Word 2010. When I open a file and use the undo button only once, it works fine. But after I've made various changes in the Word file and use the undo button, instead of undoing the last function, it undoes every change I've made since I opened the file. Using the redo button usually returns everything, but not always.

Is there a setting for the undo button that makes it just undo one function?

As afar as I know there are no settings for changing the function of the Undo or Redo buttons.

The Undo button performs the same function as closing Word without saving the changes, so it reverts to the same state that is was before it was opened.

Range 4 You're right. It reverts to the original state as if you closed without saving. I've never noticed this before. Hmm. The control z command works great in Photoshop, but doesn't seem to do it in MSW. thanks so much.

Hay All, I just tried ctrl+z in my windows 7 ultimate 64/Word 2007 and it goes back one step at a time.
Just found this, give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V and Ctrl-Z not working in Word 2010 on Windows 7





It seems like the shortcuts I've been using for years in previous versions of Word are not working anymore. For example Ctrl-Z, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V are not working (there is Alt-Backspace, etc) and I have to learn new shortcuts. This is the thing I really don't want to do.
I'm facing this problem only in Windows 7, I've got Windows XP with the same version of Office 2010 and these shortcuts are working just fine. Is there any way to change Word shortcuts to an old version?





Finally found an easy solution for this, that does not require any manual work (same problem happened for me in Office 2013 - Windows 8.1).
It appears that there is a strange language matching to the OS language (in my case OS language being English - United Kingdom).
The solution:

1. Open word
2. Open options (File -> Options)
3. Click on Language on the left menu
4. Under the section titled "Choose Display and Help Languages", you can notice the default being "Match Microsoft Windows"
5. Select "English" in each box, and click on "Set as Default"
6. Click on "OK". (at this point you will be prompted to restart Word)
7. All keyboard shortcuts will be restored to the default English ones after you restart Word.

You are correct cyclops it also works with Word 2013. It does in fact take it back one step each time.

I checked my Word options as you suggested cyclops & the settings are what you have suggested, but the are English Australian, which is the default I have used to match MS Windows in the original Windows installation set up.

I prefer to have the Australian setting as the default, as the when using the US one it wants to correct spelling if I don't use the US spelling on word like centre, disc, colour etc. & that really annoys me.

Might you be satisfied if your shortcuts work and we disable auto spell checking?
You can select a dictionary to use that would function only for spelling and ignore language setting that affects the short cuts

Thanks for your reply, but I don't have any problems with short cuts not working. I just wanted to add to your post #5 on the language settings, to show that they also work in other versions of English providing the Word & MS Windows settings match.
