I have a progrom that requires the MSCOMM32.ocx driver. When I try to register it with the REGSVR32.exe I get:

The module "C:\Windows\System32\MSCOMM32.OCX" failed to load.

Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to
check for problems with the binary or dependent.DLL files.

The specified module could not be found.

I have tried running the "cmd" as the administrator and still cannot register this file.

The company this program came from is NO HELP .... They will address the Windows 7 issue at a later date? In the mean time I cannot run this program on my new Windows 7 machine.

Before trying to diagnose the issue, please expand on the problem. Did you, for example, recently remove malware that affected your System32 folder? It's the most basic example, but simple file corruption can lead to that; the Mscomm32 issue is NOT an easy one to solve, nor does it have 1 specific answer.

You stated that you CAN run an elevated command prompt. What command did you use? "sfc /scannow" is your starting point.

Restarting Windwos with the CD in the drive might be an option to recover missing system files.

Also, check your event viewer (available in mmc.exe, or, Administrative Tools - Event Log.)

Sort your results by type (as-in, red error messages first, this would be classified as that.)

Lastly, are you getting any sort of Event ID or specific error code? These small details will get us in the right direction.

In the interim, be sure to back everything up... mscomm32 issues are known, from time to time, to escalate into worse things. ...just a heads-up.

Thanks,

Erik

Way over my head Erik. The way I understand it is the MSCOMM32.OCX driver has something to do with the OLE and toolbars or something? The file needs to be registered for the mapping program to open. I can take the same mscomm32 file and copy it to another pc (xp) and register fine, only in Windows 7 does it get the error when trying to register?
Basically is there another way to run the "regsvr32.exe MSCOMM32.ocx" in Windows 7 or is there another compatible windows 7 file that I need?

Frank, that mscomm32.ocx is an ActiveX control, so the first thing I would try is making sure you have all the latest Windows updates. Sounds like this is something that worked previously but is having trouble in Windows 7? It's not unusual for third-party developers to be unhelpful with new versions of Windows, since they don't have any control over Microsoft files.

I did some quick google searches, it looks like the mscomm32.ocx has remained largely unchanged since 1998, but I see some posts about some kind of switch getting activated in an update that prevents the file from working. I also found this Microsoft update that supposedly fixes the mscomm32.ocx, though I'm not sure if it applies to Windows 7. Try this out and let me know if it helps you at all, I'm curious to know.

I have downloaded the file and still get the error when trying to register it in windows 7.

I go to the CMD prompt:

C:\Windows\System32> regsvr32 MSCOMM32.ocx

And get:

Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to

The specified module could not be found.

And I am in the Command prompt with Administrator rights?

No, how can I get that Update

Wait a minute....I just noticed under my update history that I received and got a
"Security update for ActiveX killbits for windows 7 for x64 based systems (KB973525)

Wouldn't this disable the mscomm32.ocx ?

Update:

Unistalled the Security update listed above, re-booted, try to register the mscomm32.ocx
and still get the same error. So that wasn't it!

nope .... same error.

To make sure I am doing this right:

In windows 7 - I click "start"
In the search bar I type "cmd"
This shows the cmd under programs, I right click and choose "Run as Administrator"
I get the User Account Control pop up ... allow the following program to make changes....etc. .... I click on "Yes"
This brings up the Dos looking window, in it has

c:\windows\system32>

I type: regsvr32 MSCOMM32.ocx
or: regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\MSCOMM32.ocx

And still get the error ?

As far as I can see, you're accessing the command right. Maybe unregistering the file, deleting it then downloading it again might work  I'm out of ideas

I had the same problem

mscomm32.ocx was in the sysWOW64 folder but not the system32. I copied it to system32 and it worked fine.

It worked but the file was not there?

So I copied the mscomm32.ocx from the system32 folder to the sysWOW64 folder.
I was then able to go to the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder and run the regsvr32.exe

So far the program that needed it seems to be working :D

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!
