Hello, my Laptop recently got a problem logging on due to an RPC server problem.
Though google I found that I can easily fix that through msconfig.

I put in my windows disk to get a command prompt. I navigate to D:/Windows/System32 and run Msconfig.exe, but command prompt shows me the following error:

The version of msconfig.exe is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

How can I get msconfig to run through this prompt? If I get it running I think I'll be able to easily fix that RPC problem and be able to log into windows.

I'm running Windows 7 x64

Thankyou!

Edit: I just realized this is probably better in the software section. Any way to delete this or move it?

Hi, thanks.

I don't know much about this stuff, just guides and things I found from google. How would I access cmd prompt outside of windows? I can't start windows because it gives that RPC error at the login screen.

sfc /scannow gave this message:
There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot.

I've rebooted multiple times but it never goes through, I guess since it can't actually get into windows.

chkdsk doesn't find any problems. If you're thinking about that RPC server problem, apparently no repairs, system restores, etc can fix it. The only fix is through msconfig which I can't seem to open.

Try these solutions

Step 1: To start the RPC service, try these steps.
a. Start the computer using Windows DVD to boot to Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and select command prompt.
b. Type net start RpcSs and hit enter.
c. Type exit to close the command prompt.
d. Restart the computer and check the result.
Step 2: Check the registry entry for the service
a. Start the computer using Windows DVD to boot to Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and select command prompt.
b. On the command prompt, type regedit.exe and hit enter.
c. Look for the following entries:
d. Entry for Remote Procedure Call (RPC): Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\RpcSs
e. Entry for Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\RpcLocator
Important: Set REG_DWORD value to 2 for automatic start on RpcSs Set REG_DWORD value to 3 for manual start on RPCLocator
Very important: Modifying the registry incorrectly will cause serious damage to the computer. Backup the registry before you make any changes.

Or

First of all I want you know that this is not a big problem, All files and directories are remain so don't get panic. This error is refer to registry.
When you want to Log in, Registry load it's key and services but fails to load RPC Service, So you have to access to registry some how.The easiest way is to restart your computer, Press F8 and then select "Last Known Good Configuration" . It will copy healthy registry that has saved a few days before on your computer to current registry file.

Hey thanks.

Ive tried these solutions from another website however they dont seem to work. When I try starting the rpc service it says the service is already running.

In the registry, rpcss looks fine but there is no RpcLocator.

Also when restarting the Pc with F8, i do not get any of those options. My only avialable options are to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and to start normally. I havnt been able to find how to get those other options to appear. Do you know anything I can try so i can get the 'reset to last known configuration' to appear?

Thanks!
