MSE Beta Program Update Released

The Beta version (v2) of Microsoft Security Essentials through Microsoft Connect, has been updated to 2.0.522.0.

You can get it through Microsoft Connect here, or if you already had the previous Beta, it should be available through Windows Update. This is a Beta version.

There appears to be a few new things that are noticeable from the last Beta version.

i also noticed you now have the option to not be involved in Spynet.

Yeah, but that option was there since the earlier/beginning of Beta v2 build/s. I remember when the first MSE beta v2 came out that it finally gave you the option not to be joined.

There seems to be some confusion. You are not using a beta version. This thread has posts from several of us with the original beta who got the update wondering if it was merely an update to the beta, an RC, or a stable release. This thread makes it clear that it is still a beta. You are currently using the most recent stable release. If you would like the beta version, use one of the links above.

OK I think the previous post explains -- to get the V2 you have to be using the V1 Beta not the stable version.

So I think I'll pass on this until V2 is released in the normal way as I'm quite satisfied with V1.

I did not even notice I have the updated version. MSE installed it as a normal update.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2 Beta update brings more improvements

Microsoft has pushed an update to Security Essentials 2, which is currently in beta testing. While there aren't a vast number of forward-facing changes, there is one important one: the re-introduction of context menu scanning. Once again, you can right-click any file on your system to quickly check it for infection with MSE.

When Security Essentials 2 is finally released, it will include heuristic abilities, which will allow it to detect malware that has not yet been added to its definition files. Symantec recently took a shot at MSE because of its dependence upon definitions, saying "Unique malware and social engineering attacks fly under the radar of traditional signature-based technology alone – which is what is employed by free security tools such as Microsoft's."

I did a Normal update and I still get Version 1.0.2498.0

even doing a Manual update it says "You are already using the latest version".

I had to uninstall the previous version of MSE through Programs and Features before installing the new beta 2.0.522.0.

A lot of people had problems with the context menu option for scanning a file/folder not appearing if they did not do a clean install of 2.0. I had figured out how to fix it, but it has been a while so I might have to look up what I wrote before if anyone needs it.

What confuses me is if people on this thread with the 1.0 version have the stable release or are somehow still running the 1.0 beta.

I have no idea. As I said, I did not even realize Im using an updated version of MSE. It must have installed as a normal update or windows update.
