Following is excerpted from Microsoft Security Essentials Earns August VB100 certification

Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft's no-cost anti-malware service for consumers, achieved the VB100 award for the August 2010 Edition of Virus Bulletin.

In order for a product to be awarded the VB100 certification, it needs to detect 100% of the WildList malware samples (a prevalent malware subset contributed by a group of researchers in AV community) and must not have any false positives (FP or incorrect detections) on the Virus Bulletin clean file collection. According to Virus Bulletin, “Detection rates were strong as ever...with no problems in the WildList or clean sets, Microsoft earns another VB100 award with ease.” [Page 50, Virus Bulletin August 2010 Edition]

Microsoft products including Microsoft Security Essentials and Forefront Client Security, have received VB100 awards since June 2007.

I'm not surprised. I will also not be surprised when more people come on here swearing that MSE is no good because "Its a microsoft product" and insist on staying with Mc-POS-Afee.

I often wonder if those people realize that Forefront Client Security is the enterprise version of MSE and that MS is most certainly not going to use an inadequate AV program on enterprise systems.

Hey, I use McAfee on my system, and MSE on my 2 VMs and my other "test" partition.
I personally believe McAfee is still good. Not as good as it used to, but still good. I would ditch McAfee if only I didn't find its logs and Firewall system reliable. One thing I also hate about McAfee is that there is absolutely NO WAY for it to trust a file it has detected!

Either way, both are good in my eyes.

It's a Laptop.
i had mixed thoughts about using Microsoft security essentials but glad i made the change the interface is nice its easy to use it sits in the background and will notify you of security threats the definition updates come all the time swift and install with a breeze the virus scans are great working in the background and they give you this for free its better than some named products out there they should have it as a standard option in the windows 7 operating system when you buy the product.
i give it 5***** you do not always have to buy the most expensive internet security thinking because of the price it must be the best i think those that fault it because it is Microsoft should at least try it before thy knock it. considering Microsoft built windows 7 and now they have a cool security system to match who can grumble at that?

McAfee has a high resource usage, low detection rate, and puts hooks in the OS that are difficult to remove on occasion. The costs are high, and software firewalls are a thing of the past. Friends don't let friends use McAfee.

You can also find at least a dozen threads on here about how McAfee has ruined peoples computers. Not to mention the millions of XP computers that were taken out by McAfee a few months ago. Even hospitals use Windows XP and many using McAfee were left unable to do hardly anything. They couldn't make insurance claims, couldn't find certain information about patients, and couldn't admit new patients. McAfee has screwed up my computer, my dads computer, and recently we got a new laptop with McAfee preinstalled. That firewall you love so much, took out our entire network. Anyone who knows anything about AVs knows not to use McAfee. It's not a matter of paying for it, as this last to around we had there best consumer version free for 15 months, but I'd rather be able to use the internet.

EDIT: heres one of those threads right here: http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/103003-mcafee-update-8-9-10-causes-win-7-problems.html

The latest Norton products are much better, and I used to be a huge Norton supporter. I once said on a forum I'd marry Norton Ghost if it were a woman. However, even after testing them, and finding that they were much improved, I still feel like I can do better, with other alternatives. In a field with many choices, if one burns you, you have so many other options.

Part of it is because I get sick of saying some stuff over and over again and people just not listening. I clearly stated the McAfee was bad product, I stated why I thought so, and that most people agree. And what I hear back is "I still think they're good." Its like if I said "Don't drink cyanide because you will die very quickly" and you said "Oh, well, I think I'll drink it anyways.

The other part of it is, I have my own reasons for being mad at the world in general right now. Some people on here already know what that reason is and I don't really feel like talking about it here.
