This morning, as I was drinking my coffee and browsing some news sites, I was hit hard by HDD Repair rogue. I managed to get rid of it, and my system is almost back to normal.

The problem is, my fully up-to-date MSE never noticed a thing. It slept the blissful sleep of the angels through the whole escapade. This is not good.

MS need to really work on MSE's scareware detection capabilities. They seem to slide right by it.

I wish I knew. The only websites I had open this morning were reputable news sites. Perhaps the infection occurred last night, and it only pounced this a.m...

I tell ya... I just about pooped my SpongeBob PJs when all those alert boxes popped up! Heh.

Well, although some AV's are better than others, none are 100%.

Well, although some AV's are better than others, none are 100%.

That is true. But I know of at least two other people who got slammed by scareware in the past month, even though they were using MSE. I know this because I helped them clean up the mess.

Both of them said MSE gave them no warning; I wasn't sure if they were telling me the whole truth. Now I know they were.

I would advise using some anti malware along with AV. U can find any good one. I use a combination of MSE + malware bytes anti malware + comodo firewall. Though u don't need dedicated firewall for normal usage. Windows Firewall is enough..

Hi there
I suspect that MSE won't be around in its present form much longer -- while it's mainly fine for W7 it's been "deprecated" in W8 -- incorporated into Windows Defender which runs seamlessly in the background --not to be compared with the version of Windows defender in running W7.

I don't suppose given this that Ms will spend a lot of resources on developing MSE as a mainstream product.

I could see however Windows defender (W8 version) being backported into W7.

Cheers
jimbo

There is already a second version of MSE with better security and features in beta testing.

I feel, no AV on its own is adequate in today's increasing complex virus world. U need multiple layers of protection. And a bit of common sense to avoid fishy websites and know what to install.
