New Win 7x64 laptop bought from MS Store and hence set up by them or tech staff, with MSE loaded. But the thing I've never seen before, perhaps out of inattention, is that while its icon doesn't show in the Sys Tray, it is listed at the bottom of the Customize list and shows as "Computer status - Protected," which means it's working. So given its presence in the list, why wouldn't it be in the Tray?

Reread my post because I think your question misses the point. No matter what the setting, one would expect the icon to be present in the Sys Tray (Notification Area). I'll guess you're thinking of the Sys Tray part of the Taskbar, which I'm not.

Is this not what you`re talking about ? On the rightside of the taskbar ?

And only 1 of thr 3 settings will put it on the taskbar, not all 3.

The Notification Area, aka Sys Tray, is that collection of icons one sees when they click on the little upward pointing white arrow a little to the left of of the time in the right corner. The list of apps is what one gets when they click on the Customize link at the bottom of that pop up. Of course, it's possible to have all or some of one's sys tray icons on the taskbar - I keep two there - but that doesn't change the underlying question, since if it's not in the popup it should be on the taskbar. But in this case, MSE's icon is nowhere to be found, just it's place in the list.

Some icons have done the same thing to me in the past, rebooting always fixed it.

Not with this laptop. And it has the same things loaded in the sys tray as my desktop, plus a few more that are laptop specific.

try restarting explorer.exe.
open the task manager scroll to explorer.exe /end task.
then click file/new task run type explorer.exe and OK .
occasionally my MSE icon doesnt show despite it running and system protected. just a startup glitch sometimes.
no need to reeboot, just restart explorer

Thanks for the idea, but no change. Perhaps a reinstall of MSE is in order.
