MSE Scan stops if monitor switched off.

I recently discovered that if I switch off my monitor while Microsoft Security Essentials is running a scan then the scan is paused until I switch the monitor on again.
How can I prevent this happening?

Hi,

MSE runs completely independantly of the monitor....but just to check, I turned off the monitor during a scan and it has no effect on MSEl, as expected.

Can you complete the steps in this tutorial (don't forget Step #5):

That's pretty bizarre actually - unless by "turning off the monitor" you really mean "putting your system to sleep."

Is that what you do?

Have updated sysinfo.

I turn the monitor off by pressing the on/off button on the monitor.

The current power plan is set to "never sleep".

I have noticed this behaviour on a couple of occasions.
I start a scan, turn off the monitor, go to bed. When I switch monitor on again the scan has not progressed.

Can you do a small test?

Start a scan, then turn your monitor off and take note of the scan progress as you do that, then turn it back on after 30 seconds. Has the scan progressed, or has it started at exactly the same point as when you turned the monitor off?

Tried that and the scan does progress.
The disk activity light flickers, as it does when I do my overnight scan.
I guess one night I should stay awake and watch it until it stops.

Checked. Nothing set to sleep.

Mmmm. I can't explain it. What I suggest is running the scan again overmight, but instead of turning off the monitor, simply let the screensaver kick in. The examine again in the morning to see what it looks like.

Started scan and let blank screensaver kick in. Scan completed successfully.

However, I am still puzzled by the fact that powering off monitor causes scan to be suspended.

In any event, after reading the recent reports from AV Comparatives, I have decided to give Avast a try.

Hi,

There can only be 2 explanations:

1. Powering off the monitor sends a signal to the PC to go to sleep - I have never heard of that before, and am unconvinced that might be the cause.

2. Random freeze of MSE that is coincident with the monitor being turned off - this can be easily checked.

See if you can replicate the issue : run an overnight scan, and turn the monitor off again.
