Solved MSE updates?

I use both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. I have disabled UAC for now while I download and get my pc tweaked to my liking. Will enable it when I'm done. Maybe even tonight.

Which FW do you use?

I use the Windows 7 Firewall.

I guess it what floats our boats.
I am very, very careful where I go and what I open and even use a 3rd party called WOT.

I use WOT also but add my own judgment as it isn't perfect.

jsmoline: Wearing my security hat: I have never felt the need to disable UAC with either Windows Vista or Windows 7, regardless of how many programs I was installing or any changes I was making. The UAC prompt allowed me to visually confirm that what I thought I clicked was indeed what I was installing/changing. I really have no problem approving the UAC elevation prompt.

When I first installed Windows 7, I went looking for tweaks. Disabling UAC was one of them, along with disabling Aero and turning off indexing etc. All are back up and being used except indexing, which I will turn back on. I can't tell any difference in performance either way. 7 is a very good OS in my opinion. I hope it's around for a while. Hate to see XP go.

I suspect that the reason you went looking for tweaks is because they were needed to enhance performance with Windows XP. The same is not the case for Windows 7. IMO, it works great "out of the box" (with the caveat that it is installed on a computer with the appropriate hardware components).

I agree. MS did a great job on this OS. I just assumed tweaks would be needed, like XP. I guess it takes a ME or a Vista along the way to learn from

i just updated MSE manually, now the update status-message looks "normal" again, so it seems that MS has solved the problem.

i forgot to check the "update status-message" BEFORE i updated manually,
so i don´t know if it works normally with "Auto-updates" too.
i´m going to have a look tomorrow.

MSE will update every time you run a scan, if you tell it to do such. Other than Windows Updates, it is not updated daily, unless you run a scan daily.

that problem seems to have been solved now.


MSE CAN be updated several times daily, WITHOUT doing any scan, my solution to the problem:

I had this problem too. Signatures wouldn't update beyond the 15th.

(I did go to the microsoft site and I did verify that new updates were available, they just refused to d/l)

I uninstalled/reinstalled MSE and after it updated, it had the same problem, getting "stuck" on the update for the 15th.

Checking my windowsupdate.log, I noticed there was some kind of a communication problem. Researching the error I found several possible solutions, but didn't apply them that night since it was late.

These were some of the errors present on the windowsupdate.log

However, the next day, just out of curiosity, I used the Windows Update instead of the Update button on MSE, and the updates started working again.

I've been using Windows Update ever since and so far, the defs stay up to date.

As long as it keeps working this way, I don't have a problem. If it ain't broke....

I thought I had it worked out by setting it to daily scans and update before scan. It didn't update today before the scan. I wonder if sometimes there are no updates. I hear people talking about MSE updating two or three times a day. I have never seen that happen. Also wonder just how much these updates are filling up my hard drive. Although I haven't noticed anything taking up space. Still thinking about Panda Clouds claims of never updating I guess.

The normal frequency that I saw for updates was 2X a day, usually in the morn & the afternoon.

I checked the MS website and apparently they do release the updates on average 2X a day.

If you want to verify what the latest updates are and when they were released, here is the site:

Thanks, that's good to know. I see when they are released. I want MSE to do this. I don't want have to manually download updates. MSE didn't do it. Maybe it's a time zone thing. I have daily scans set for 8 AM eastern time.

I updated myself this morning at 9. MSE says updates created 4:33 am 6/20. Nothing tells me when I did it. I wouldn't care if I knew it updated at least once a day. It should at least tell me what time it updates, or am I not doing something right?

They release updates 2X a day normally, but it is unlikely that you will get both updates unless you do it manually,

AFAIK it checks under 2 circumstances:
Before a daily scan
and when Windows update is checking for updates anyway

I guess I'll just have to trust that Microsoft is updating MSE when it needs to do so. Thats kind of scary.
