Again, just like last time I installed MSE, it is constantly taking up 40% CPU and a good 200,000kb memory, which most arent taking up anywhere near that. Any idea why its doing that when its just sitting idle.

How long does it do this, and does it ever stop and go back to "normal"?

Same here. MSE takes up much RAM that's why I uninstalled it and considered installing another AV that consumes less RAM and is more effective then MSE.

There are MSE "fakes" out there. Are you certain that you are not running on of them?

I've never seen the behavior you mention from any version of MSE installed on any machine that I have used it on.

I would have to agree with pparks1. My task manager shows about 63MB for MSE. I'd run a secondary on-demand scan for malware using the free Malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes

If your machine comes back clean I'd next uninstall your current version of MSE and download again from the official Microsoft site.

I find it strange that the OP is obsessing about RAM, look at the CPU usage! One of the possible reasons is that there is some other service running, writing files regularly, those file writes are triggering MSE scans.

Too many to describe...
OS
Windows 7 x64 pro/ Windows 7 x86 Pro/ XP SP3 x86
I downloaded it from microsoft.com

And other AVs dont do this to me. Spy Sweeper uses a bit more than others, but not an absurd amount, and my 90 day trial of N360 never used up any at all cept during scans.

and the only other services that ever take up a ton of resources are photoshop when working with large images, scvhost, and chrome (the last 2 are only when I have about 200 tabs open :P)

Open your task manager, click show processes from all users and see if you can spot another process running in the background.

If you want to do a more in depth exploration of your processes, d/l Process Explorer.

Process Explorer

I agree with what was stated earlier, you may have inadvertently d/l ed a fake MSE.

Probably best to uninstall it, go to the site link marsmimar posted for MSE and re-install it.

If it still does that after you have reinstalled it from the legitimate site, it may mean something isn't getting along with it, although this is rare as MSE seems to "play well" with most AV's

cclloyd9785, what other security tools do you have installed besides MSE, at the moment? What other anti-virus besides MSE, Spy Sweeper and Norton have you installed in the past?

Sometimes (it may not be the case here), an anti-virus will not uninstall properly when using the normal Windows uninstaller and will cause problems when using other anti-virus.

To remove any leftover files from either Spy Sweeper or Norton, run their respective removal tools, restarting your system after each one.
Spy Sweeper

SleeStak, you should see two MSE processes when viewing the processes for all users. msseces.exe and MsMpEng.exe

Thats where I downloaded it from :/
