I know this forum is for Windows 7 for if the Mods have to move this post thats fine. Since so many of you have given rave reviews about Microsoft Security Essentials so I decided to try it on one of XP Laptops. So far I am very happy but I noticed when I do a FULL SCAN it takes hours. Is this normal and do I really need to do a full scan that often. It's not a bad laptop for XP it has a AMD Turion dual core processor 1.61 GHz with 2 gigs of Ram.

The full scan option can take awhile so it is normal...and this does also depend on how many files and folders you have on your computer and the hardware.

I usually go with the quick scan route and maybe a full scan every month. If you suspect something is on your computer then I would run a full scan with MSE and Malwarebytes.

Hope this Helps,
Ryan

It used to take a long time even on my quad core. With you configuration you should not expect otherwise. The scan was one of the reasons I abandoned MSE and went with NIS2011. They scan during system idle time and never interfere with what I am doing.

As an alternative I suggest to keep MSE but scan with SuperAntiSpyware. That is a very good scanner but no replacement for MSE.

Unfortunately yes.....

Here's my first observation a little over a year ago - http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/35027-microsoft-security-essentials-windows-7-a.html

Here's another one a couple of months ago - http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/131437-mse-2-final-released-8.html#post1140719 and http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/131437-mse-2-final-released-9.html

Different versions, same issue.... long scan times

Outside of that I really like the program and it is my only AV.

Glad to see this is normal. I don't have to much on the computer and I use NIS 2011 on three of my "main" computers but don't want to pay more for NIS on the PC I don't use that often. Thanks for the replys.

Other than the slow "full" scan times, the program is pretty good. Can't say how it will operate on XP but under Windows 7 it's very good and highly rated.

Good luck.
