Solved MSI motherboard won't read anything, no usb no DVD drive

Hey first time poster here. So, after some trying to access msi's website with my phone which isn't the greatest I thought I'd search for another site to ask this on. I recently built a brand new computer because my old motherboard said dram problem and blinked red, wouldn't boot/turn-over. Not the main reason for buying a new system but it was satisfying. Above all else I bought an MSI Z170 A mobo and a shiny new 2TB drive to install everything on.

Long story short I poured over bios options to finally discern that my usb and DVD/cd drive (just 1 drive here, does everything) doesn't read. No keyboard, using a PS/2, mouse works though. Can't read any discs except cds that I've burned with data on them, no msi motherboard drivers etc. What is happening?

Shame you didn`t buy a ssd instead, you could have bought another storage drive later, as you already have a 500 GB and a 1 TB.


Either your install dvd is bad or your dvd drive is bad.

I would download a fresh iso file to create a new install dvd.

Make sure your keyboard is plugged into a black usb 2.0 port.

I had no issues at all installing W7 on my Asus Z170 using a dvd.

You can use this link to download a fresh Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 Iso file, and no way should you be using 32 bit, you have 16 GB of memory.

I'm thinking make it a bootable CD since my usb doesn't work either? I'm unsure of how to use that....I mean I know there's tools out there to make bootable discs.

Also you think it's my drives themselves? I'll see if I can get my hands on a new one this one is back from my 2011 build

Please, it`s not a CD, it`s a DVD, Windows 7 does not fit on a CD

Oops, yeah lol. Thank you. Also, friend suggested tonight that it's maybe a bad mobo and there's no reason it wouldn't read usb 2.0 thumb drives....hoping to not have to blow cash tomorrow on something that might not need replacing....

Yes, as long as you have a good Iso file you can create an install usb stick with Rufus. Plug it into a black usb 2.0 port.

You don`t have to change the boot order in the Bios either, just use the one time boot menu to choose from the usb stick 1 time.

And as I said, install 64 bit, not 32 bit.

I'm deciding to RMA the motherboard, usb 2.0 not working, plus buying a new CD/DVD drive so pc will finally read the mobo drivers discs. I guess this is solved. Thanks for everyone's help

I's NOT the motherboard.
New skylake and kabylake MoBos comes with chipsets that has only USB 3.
Win 7 doesn't have USB 3 drives. Create a Windows 7 USB flash installation with new drives for new MB's
MSI, Asus, Gigabyte and others have an application to install USB 3 drives to the Win 7 installation disk.
Go to MSI site and download the application (it's probably also on the CD that came with the MB)

That`s not true, his board has 2 usb 2.0 ports.

His keyboard should work all the way through the install, but of course he needs a fully functioning dvd drive, that goes without saying.

MSI calls the software Smart Tool, with that you can create a usb installer with integrated usb 3.0 drivers, if you have an install dvd or iso file.

This is a Z170-A Pro, not exactly sure what he has.

Brian, on my Z170 MB, the USB 2 uses the USB 3 drivers as I tried to install Win 7 using the back USB 2 and they didn't work.
Once the USB 3 drivers were added to the Win 7 installation disk, they did work.

In my opinion MSI makes good stuff, there`s probably nothing wrong with the board.

In a few days time I'll come back and give a status update, after I've made the boot flash drive and got a new DVD drive....��

And if you didn`t download a fresh Iso file yet, do it now from the link I posted in reply #2 before it doesn`t work anymore, because they removed the direct Microsoft link we could use to get Windows 7 Iso`s.

I'm not currently in possession of a computer that has internet lol it may be a while...plus my mobo or windows install isn't detecting usb flash drives anyway.... =(

It was the dvd drive I feel like an idiot. Everything is working great now, it wouldn't read the drivers part of the Windows7 disc. Thanks for everyone's wisdom and encouragement

How is your graphics card doing ?
