I have found that when I run Word 2007 and go to the open a file icon, I get the open file window that shows my Word documents. There is the preview pane and when I click on a file for preview, I get the error message: "This file can't be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Office Word previewer".

How can I fix this? Thank-you,

Philip

Thank-you for your prompt reply. I ran Microsoft Diagnostics and everything was reported as operating properly. Problem still exists. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi Philip

My search revealed the following:
Error message when you try to preview a Word document, an Excel workbook, or a PowerPoint presentation in the Open dialog box: "This file can’t be previewed"
... which doesn't seem to offer any resolution.

However, further research came up with this:
To fix the error with the windows preview in Windows 7 (64bit), try the following steps:

1) On the taskbar on your Windows 7 desktop, click the windows button
2) Navigate to All Programs > Microsoft Office
3) Right Click on Microsoft Office Word 2007
4) Select Properties
5) On Compatibility Tab check the checkbox for "Run this program in compatability mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
6) Click OK
Extract taken from: "This file can't be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Office Excel previewer."

I am running Windows 7 32 bit system. Why should I have to downgrade compatibility to make a feature work?

Ill try some of the suggestions. On mine, sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. It seems to have a mind of it's own.

Does Microsoft not have a fix for this? Because I purchased my version of Office bundled with my ThinkPad, I would have to pay Microsoft for personalized support.

Some further searching on Microsoft:
Error message when you try to preview a Word document, an Excel workbook, or a PowerPoint presentation in the Open dialog box: "This file can’t be previewed"

This is one of the suggestions:
Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically

Alternatively:
Microsoft Fix it Solution Center: troubleshooting software issues

Or finally, contact the manufacturer of your bundled laptop:
Lenovo Support - Home page

I do hope one the the links will solve your problem. :)
For the benefit of others who might be experiencing similar problems, please post back with the result.

Someone in the Lenovo Forum reported that Microsoft was advised of and acknowledged this problem over a year ago and promised to work on a fix. If a fix was issued, I have not found it.

However you can view Word documents through Excel and Excel documents through Word (but not through Excel).

Well- As I mentioned above, Office 2007 has a mind of it's own. Last night the preview feature was working fine. Just a few minutes ago, I ran the diagnostics and it said that one problem was found which it fixed. I tried the preview feature again and it wasn't working. So at this point, I do not believe that there is a fix until Microsoft does the fixing.:(

In one of the links which I left earlier in this thread:

we recommend that users save Thumbnail preview images with their documents to allow for a quick preview directly within the file list. There is a checkbox at the bottom of the Save dialog to save a thumbnail with your Excel file - checking that will allow users to have a quick preview of that file while within Excel.

If memory serves me (and usually it doesn't :) ) Office 2007 was released to manufacturers around the end of 2006. Long before Windows 7 was released. So many (most?) of the features were built around XP/Vista which was released around the first part of 2007. Sometimes Windows 7 does a better job of running these older programs in compatibility mode.

Just another thought - have you installed the service pack?

And for other MS products:
