MTS M2TS Video Editing?

Sorry if it's been answered, I searched and didn't find a good answer...

I just got a canon vixia hf20, and it's videos are in the m2ts format. I tried loading in wmm 2.6 but it won't open. I tried with windows live movie maker, and it froze...

I've heard bad things about adobe premiere elements 8. I've heard I can use sony vegas. Do I have any other choices?

They play natively in Windows 7 as long as you don't load any codec packs. <now researching> So far I've found AviDemux able to edit "ID4 Independence Day" movie accurately. I saved it to h.264/AAC in MKV format.

You might want to troubleshoot a bit more as I'm saving the same file in SD WMV using Windows Live Movie Maker right now. I'm not sure if I have the new beta version or the old one since I just downloaded it, opened the .m2ts and saved it into another format but it seems like it's working OK at the moment. I will update this post with more info when it's done.

Worked flawlessly, good quality and used all four cores for the transcode. Took about 25 minutes to transcode 720p to SD.

Depends what type of editing you want to do but tsMuxer is capable of saving simple slices to disc. It's free. Many other "front end" tools use it.

Also you can remux to .mkv without reencoding. Use tsMuxer to demux all streams, then use mkvmergeGui to put them together in an .mkv container. Probably the biggest shortcoming at this point is tsMuxer doesn't support PGS subtitles.

Just try it out before you buy it though. some people get quite intimidated by video editing software.
I am pretty accustomed to the complex software since I have been doing video editing on the PC since 1994 when 9GB SCSI Drives were $2000+ each.
