Multi PC Dilemma

Hi all,

I've been using Windows 7 since the release of the beta (now using RC) on my old Pentium 4 desktop - it runs a treat!

Then, a couple of weeks ago, I made use of a great offer from Dell (no doubt discounting PCs pre-Win 7 launch) and bought a laptop. The laptop is pre-installed with Vista 64 and so I've ordered the Windows 7 upgrade.

Ok, so the dilemma is, the licence on the RC version expires in May (I think) so what do I do at that point? Am I right in saying the Win 7 upgrade won't work on my desktop as it's 64-bit? Is there any way around this? Or do I have to bite the bullet and buy a 32-bit edition of Win 7 for my desktop?

Please advise,

Kev

A clean install would have no problems.
But why wouldnt the 64bit upgrade to a 64bit?

Sorry, probably didn't make myself very clear. The desktop is running a 32-bit OS and is about 5 years old. So don't think it will run a 64-bit OS.

Run the upgrade advisor off the 64 bit DVD it will tell you!

I upgraded my desktop from Win 7 RC 32bit to Win7 x64 using the Windows 7 Upgrade version. The install routine had no issues with the fact that I was going from 32 to 64 bit.

However, is the Dell upgrade version an OEM version (only allowed to be installed on a Dell) or is it simply THE upgrade version (the same that I installed)? If it is a Dell OEM version that may restrict you from using it to install on your desktop.

BTW, I believe that the RC version starts an annoying tactic of making the OS much harder to use (reboots once an hour or something like that) in March, not May.

edit: Ah, disregard. I see your additional posts now....

Computing is primarily business use with off-time troubleshooting practice: Remote desktop, scanning and producing invoices, some minor graphics work.
Pentium 4s are not 64bit. They predate it. Unless you have one of the Prescott cores from 2004.

Hi BeechV35Pilot - it's the Dell Upgrade version, so you're probably right, I might not be able to install it at all on another machine.
