What is the absolute best way / program to compress files?

I am trying to compress a collection of videos to 4.7GB or less so I can burn them to a single CD. It is currently 5.35GB.

I tried 7zip on a single file to test it's compression ability and it didn't even compress it 1mb less. -_-


So what do you guys think? Also is there anything out there like a compression conversion tool?

Like you enter 5GB and it tells you what the normal compression would be based on averages or a single program?

And what is the absolute best compression settings to get the files as small as possible?

You're trying to compress Video files?

Theres not much you can do with them. Many times trying to compress them actually makes a slightly larger file.
The problem is, that Video can not really be compressed. In a sense, its already as compressed as its going to get.



The best way to make a video smaller is to recode them to a target size. But then theres quality loss compressing a already compressed file.
You would be better off to recode from the original source, making the files smaller.



In regards to what you're trying to do however, the only real way you could accomplish it is by not compressing, but rather splitting. Set 7zip to archive the video files into segments of DVD size, CD size whatever.
You will then have parts that will fit whatever size disc you choose. But remember that youll need all those parts together, in one place, to unzip them back to a single video file.

Definitely a good point. Might I add that, if you're targeting that video file for playback on DVD players in your living room, on a console or anything other than a PC, you can also just buy a double-layered DVD and burn it to that.
