multiple Application Data folders taking up lots of space

I keep migrating to larger disks, but feel like I want to solve the problem.

My Application Folders has multiple coples that seem to keep replicating. I noticed this on a previous wWin 7 computer build. Is there an issues here for is this correct?

Also, I want to move my ihone apps to another drive to free space. I'm running File|Library Organize and am copying the apps to a new drive, but don't thing that'll move them. Any suggestions on moving iPHone apps also appreciated.

Thanks,

Reid

When was the last time you had a Clean Reinstall?

For those who accumulate a lot of crapware and file buildup, its the perfect solution since once its set up and running as you like with your important apps, you can save a backup image to use in place of reinstall.

For now I'd run CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
which is very good with cleaning out the temp folders. You can also do this manually on all the temp Application Data folders. Then I would do a boot time defrag with Puran Defrag Free Edition - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com which gets at System files and includes an Intelligent Optimizer on the Additional Operations tab that can speed things up.

Those Application Data folders are junctions, their is only one and it takes ZERO space. You are seeing this because you altered permissions. You are not suppose to be able to access them which prevents this from happening!

"All Users" is same as C:\ProgramData... called a junction point. (sort of synonym)

C:\Users\All Users>dir/als \users
De volumenaam van station C is System
Het volumenummer is DDC0-8980
Map van C:\users
14-07-2009 06:08 <SYMLINKD> All Users [C:\ProgramData]
14-07-2009 06:08 <KOPPELING> Default User [C:\Users\Default]
0 bestand(en) 0 bytes
---------------
"c:\programdata\application data" points to c:\programdata. That why it looks like it's in a loop. But it's quite normal! And it doesn't use extra disk space. Unless....... you migrate using xcopy or copy or robocopy command

I don't think they are empty. They look like they are taking up 92 GB of space. I have a 128 GB SSD drive for my OS, and it's basically full. The only permission I altered was to run the Take Ownership reg hack on my OS and to set my UAC to never notify.

They are empty. Your software is not smart enough to tell the difference between a junction and a folder.

The only permission I altered was to run the Take Ownership...
There you go. Taking ownership of the system drive fubars permissions and makes this mess.

I still don't know what to do as they appear to be taking up 92 GB of space and my HD is full.

How did you migrate the files? Copy, xcopy, robocopy, some kind of partition copy, backup program?

I build the computer in June 2012, and them migrated to an SSD using Acronis True Image. As I said, I had this same issue with my last computer build.

The folders in question are still junctions. The little arrow in the Explorer screenshot confirms it.

try adding a file to the root app data and see if it replicates.

Windows does NOT like it when you take ownership of the whole drive that it's booting from. That being said, I don't know if that caused the problem.

Download spacesniffer (run it as administrator) and it will tell you for sure or not if that's the problem with your missing hard drive space.

I got rid of my itunes apps, so that freed up 22 GB. Here is the Spacesniffer report:

C:\ [91.6Gb]
[ 15.9Gb] pagefile.sys
[ 376Kb] bootmgr
[ 36Kb] 1020.log
[ 12Kb] SyncErrors73010168.xml

[ 4Kb] HanDBaseSync.log
[ 4Kb] END
[ 4Kb] .rnd
[ 0b] test.txt
[ 0b] Lightroom catalog

C:\Windows [23.2Gb]

C:\Windows\winsxs [8.2Gb]

So things are looking more reasonable. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Reid
