Solved Multiple BSODs caused by ntoskrnl.exe (apparently) when playing games

Since about mid January now whenever I play games like osu!, WoW, RO2, or PSO2 my laptop will cause a blue screen at a pretty much random time. It can work for hours, or it can BSOD within moments of opening a game. Making it annoying to recreate. I tried almost everything the internet suggested before finally deciding to do a factory reset, which to my dismay still did not solve the problem. It has even had the BSOD during Firefox sessions before, where not a lot was happening. Although that was before the reset and hasn't happened since. So my final hope is asking here, it seems. I will try everything that is suggested, even if I already have tried it previously.

(I got 2 BSODs since, but the most recent one was caused by HTTP.sys, which I've never seen before).

An almost 5 years old laptop with the integrated GPU only is never a good device to play games.

Specially when the display driver seems to be the latest. Still, try to download and install this one: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver, Windows 7

Is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy. Alternatively, you can publish a Speccy snapshot too: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/311593-speccy-publish-snapshot-your-system-specs.html .

It is lso appearing that you havent perform a clean install over this time? A lot of Toshiba bloatware are present there. I'd recommend you to http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219576-clean-up-factory-bloatware.html, with a special reference to Point #13

13. Consider a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which is often better than getting a new computer considering how pre-installed bloatware can corrupt Windows 7 even if it's completely cleaned up.

That's true, I'd get a new one if I could. It has worked fine to my standards with these games beforehand blue screen free though.

Thanks for this tip, I had no idea so much of this stuff was unnecessary and a waste of space.

Well, it seems I am not getting the ntoskrnl error, which occurred randomly during osu! games. No way to tell if it is fixed for sure though, aside from it didn't appear for a record period of time after installing that driver and cleaning some stuff up. But I still am unable to load LoL anywhere past the tutorial game, or PSO2 past the intro screen despite being able to do so before these BSODs started appearing. Crashes from these games give different driver names as sources of the problem as you may see with the new dumps in the updated file:

All these blue screen problems started happening at the same time. The conditions for them to appear are playing games. osu! is much less strenuous than PSO2 or LoL, so maybe my problem has been solved for less demanding games. I wonder if I have multiple problems giving different errors, or one problem causing different errors. The bug check string and the drivers they are caused by don't seem to be consistent anymore. Well, they weren't really anyway, except for ntoskrnl being the driver.

After your reply, if necessary, I will probably try a clean install and see what happens then. Thanks.

Edit: Okay osu! crashed again after about 10 minutes, CPU had around 49 degrees on speccy just running osu! and LoL was averaging at about 56 degrees, possibly higher I couldn't check, before it blue screened. ntoskrnl doesn't seem to be appearing anymore, and I have attached these extra two dumps. (Should I keep posting extra dumps or are they not extra helpful)?

Mate, if the BSODs are occurring during games only (as I am seeing), better you dont game on it. It generates various BSODs during various games.

During LoL:

But, the hardware aged up for gaming. You have to accept this fact.

As a side note, get rid of intel rapid storage. First uninstall it from Control Panel > Programs and Features. Then Uninstall the driver from device manager.

1. Right click on "my computer" icon and click "manage" on the context menu.
2. It will open the "computer management" window.
3. Select "Device Manager" in the left pane, It will list all the existing devices up.
4. Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" by clicking on the triangle in front of it.
5. Select one Intel device item under it, right click, uninstall.
6. Continue the process for all Intel items under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"
7. Now restart the computer. At restart, windows will auto configure the appropriate native system driver.

I see. I thought it might have been a solvable software problem. But you are saying it is a hardware/laptop is old and naturally dying problem? That never occurred to me. I can accept that. I guess that would explain how nothing I tried ever seemed to work. Okay. Well before I mark this topic as solved I want just want conformation from you that this is what you mean if you will.

Hello LewiiG, to begin with, I'm going to ask you to run some tests to see if there is something going on we are not aware of. If you would please run sfc /scannow, it is a system file checker which will attempt to check and repair system files. Next run chkdsk from a command prompt. It will tell you it can't be done because the disk is in use, then will ask if you want to schedule one, answer yes and reboot. It may take quite a while to run but will check the hard drive for errors. Please run chkdsk C: /F /R . This next test is for the ram and will take several hours. Run it overnight for at least 8 full passes or until you get an error. If you get an error, you can stop the test by pressing escape. This will tell you how http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html. Each pass is a series of tests which test something different, it takes 8 passes to completely test the ram. Trust me, I know what a pain that is, I've run it more times thanI care to remember, as with all these tests. Also please install CPUz and post a screenshot (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9733-screenshots-files-upload-post-seven-forums.html) of the CPU, mainboard, Memory and SPD tabs. I would also like you to post a screenshot of Disk Management. (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/274797-disk-management-post-screen-capture-image.html) Hopefully that will give us an idea of the problem. Also, have you installed all windows updates? Please feel free to ask any questions you would like. We don't mind answering them.

Sfc / scannow gave no errors. chkdsk C: /F /R didn't look like it gave any errors, as it ended without indicating anything. It might have fixed something though. Memtest86 ran for 13 hours during the day completing 8 passes without any errors. I could run it for longer if necessary, it's just hard to sleep over the sound of the fan :L

Also please install CPUz and post a screenshot of the CPU, mainboard, Memory and SPD tabs.

Hmm. Okay. Well right now the CPU is 50 degrees and that's with Speccy (of course,) and Firefox open with Youtube, Facebook and this forum in tabs. I usually have a lot more tabs than that though. I have no idea what temperatures are ideal for any situation.

LewiiG, most everything looks OK. If there was a problem with the disk, hopefully chkdsk fixed it. I hope Arc or someone will take a look at your screenshot of disk management. I'm not that familiar with OEM set ups. The system boots from the active partition. Your active partition is the recovery partition which is listed as empty. There's most likely a reason for that. Your CPU was released in 2009 and is getting some age on it and was an entry level CPU when released. I have one similar too, and performance is lacking. I believe mine is a T2800.The max temp is listed as 105C. But, that is the temp where the CPU shuts down. I wouldn't let it get even close to that if you can. If I may make a few suggestions. You have a 64 bit OS and 4 GB of ram on a weak CPU. It will take part of that 4GB just to run the OS, so it would perform better if you keep as few tabs open as you can. This is especially true when running any demanding tasks on it.

I have one last thing to say. It may or not be related to BSODs anymore but also could be.

Would updating the BIOS have any chance of fixing anything? I realized that it could be updated and sure enough there is a more recent version than 2009 that seems like it is for my laptop here BIOS Downloads | Toshiba - Toshiba

However, I tried installing it or whatever but was told I couldn't because my battery was less than 10%. The thing is, my battery has always been less than 10%. More specifically, it has been at 0% (plugged in, not charging) for about 2 years now when I guess the battery died. It doesn't work without the charger, so it's more like a sub-standard desktop right now.

My question is, is it worth buying a new battery (this one? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Battery-Toshiba-SATELLITE-Satellite-5200MAH/dp/B00AZT57MM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392740427&sr=8-1&keywords=toshiba+l500+battery) so that I can update the BIOS? Even if it doesn't fix the BSOD, which I have pretty much given up trying to fix now, is it worth it for any benefits it might have? I should probably buy the battery anyway, I just left it, but I have heard about risks when updating the BIOS so yeah.

Updated BIOS or new battery will not do any better. A new GPU, a new processor (which will most possibly require a new motherboard) and new cooler will revive the computer to a new one.
