multiple desktops?

hi,
i'm just wondering if windows 7 x64 has a feature where i can switch between multiple desktops. i have a computer set up with linux with ubuntu os that has this feature and i always liked it. now i want to have it on win7. i know there are downloads for it, but do i already have this capability?

Windows does not offer that feature. I would love to see it implemented myself. That is a compelling feature of Linux for sure. Microsoft does have the virtual desktop manager in power toys and there are third party solutions to virtual desktops.

A very good desktop manager that I've used in the past with lots of options to choose from.

Hi coup de etat,

if you point your browser to the sysinternals download from technet, unzip the contents and paste the desktops.exe in your Windows directory, you can have 4 individual desktops.

Either autorun it from the startup folder or put a shortcut on the desktop to launch as & when, it's a sweet feature that linux users have had for a while...

If you have an ATI video card, then they have a program that does multiple desktops, I think it's called Hydrovision or something. It's free to download together with the ATI drivers.

Sysinternals indeed does contain a program for that as well, but I never managed to get it work right and I read somewhere that there are known issues with it.

I have not researched the multiple desktops issue with any diligence, since I have not found a good use for it, I prefer to have multiple monitors instead of virtual desktops, but this is what comes to mind.

Best one out there. works great, fast and reliable and has some cool effects like rotating cubes when switching and integration with Windows 7 taskbar aero peek (to peek into other desktops). Each desktop is independent - each can have its own icons, backgrounds, etc. I have been using it for years and it keeps getting better. And it is free. One of the best free programs I have ever used.

Does Dexpot need to be installed?

What I liked about the Sysinternals one was no install needed, just run desktops.exe.
