Multiple errors, DNS, network icon red x, etc.

For the past several weeks I have been attempting to clear out errors that appear in my log files when I reboot. At the moment, none of these errors seem to be having much impact on my using my system and/or the internet ---- but I worry about them. I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to chase down the cause of these error messages and how to make them go away in the future.

When the computer starts, the network icon on the right side of the task bar starts out looking like a console with a green circle. Then it might turn briefly into a clear icon or a caution(warning) icon. But then it gets the dreaded red X in the lower right corner. I've tried doing various things suggested in threads found by searching in this forum, but nothing is causing the red x to disappear. It has not always been there, but only for the past month or so. I don't recall anything I might have done when it first started appearing.

Another error message has to do with DNS failing to allocate 0 bytes of memory.

Another has to do with the net.* services failing to start. In fact if I look in services they are locked on "starting" and I can do nothing with them.

My system is a fairly new DELL, 8500. It has a built in wireless, but I connect to my Verizon router via ethernet cable. I've tried disabling the wireless (and also the Bluetooth), but that has not helped resolve anything. It has a RealTek PCIe GBE Faimily Controller. In the past, I have gotten messages in the event log about the RealTek Controller being disconnected from the network.

Thanks for reminding me. It has been a while since I ran Malwarebytes. My virus program is AVAST, and it scans on downloads etc, plus on demand.

I did Mbam and it found a handful of PUPs.

Doing a web search on some of them led me to the malwaretips page which said to run AdvCleaner. I did that (took a while to find a site to download from though -- the *.fr site would not load).
The tips page then said to download and run Junkware Removal Tool utility -- but that did not work.
Next step was to run Mbam again and use it to delete whatever was left -- Did that.
Final step was to run Hitman Pro -- did that.

After all of that, some of the errors/warnings given above seem to have gone away.
The red X on the internet icon is no longer there.

BUT, these errors are still there and I would appreciate any further suggestions for clearing them.

After that run the following command in an elevated command prompt.

sfc /scannow

You really should be over in the anti virus section of the forum because this problem doesn't have much to do with networking.

I've run the sfc /scannow frequently. It has never found anything.

I'll give the link you posted a try and report back later.

I posted here because all the errors seemed to point to some sort of problem in network, i.e. the net.* services hanging, the DNS errors, the ethernet controler getting disconnected, etc.

The network problems are just the end result of having multiple virus infections on the machine.

You have some bad ones on there for certain so maybe the link will help with that problem.

I'm not sure why you say I have virus infections. None of the things you have suggested to run have show any virus -- just adware and PUPs (which were also associated with adware).

I've followed the last link you gave, and a couple of the programs pointed out more potential adware and deleted it.

BUT -- the DNS errors are still there and the Realtek controller is still disconnecting on a regular basis. The net.* services hang on trying to start. Not only that, but another problem with effect on my full screen game has come back -- it drops to the task bar frequently as if something is grabbing focus away from it.

I seem to have run out of things to try. I'm going to have to expand my search for solution.

FYI, I think that I have solved one of the error messages. The event log had said that net.msmq listener adapter could not start, ditto for net.pipe and net.tcp. The services file showed these services in mode "starting".

The following link, Techie: Net.Pipe Listener Adapter in starting state
gave instructions that seemed to have solved at least that problem.
I edited the file applicationHost.config and added the suggested lines (they were not there at all originally). Then I checked the services and the three services had already started up.
I did a restart just to make sure, and did not get the usual error messages, but instead got info messages that they had started.

I'll have to watch for a while to see if this was possibly causing any of the other error messages, such as DNS proxy agent failing to assign 0 bytes of memory.

In addition, I saw discussion on disabling ICS -- turns out that service was active on my computer for some reason, so I have turned it off. Our computers all connect to the internet via the Verizon router/modem. This computer uses ethernet cable.

To ensure that the protocol is configured correctly in the listenerAdapters section:
1.Open an elevated Command Prompt window. Click Start , point to All Programs , click Accessories , right-click Command Prompt , and then click Run as administrator .
2.Type cd %Windir%\system32\inetsrv\config 3.Type notepad applicationHost.config 4.Find the listenerAdapters section under system.applicationHost . Make sure the protocol is entered there.
