Multiple Icons Replaced by 4-colored shields

So I like to customize windows, by using themes, icons etc to match up with my desktop and what have you.

I decided to tr out Iconpackager since I figured that would make things easier than having to change all my icons by hand, which wouldn't even work half the time anyway.

Anyways, seemed to work alright at first, but some time later something went awry and I somehow had a conglomeration of icons from all the themes included scattered about my system. So after countless hours trying to fix it, I ended up uninstalling it.

Oh but things are never that easy.:sarc:

It ended replacing all my desktop icons with the 4-colored shield, along with my startmenu and taskbar icons.

I'd go to the properties for my programs, figuring I'll just have to restore the icons myself by hand, but no such luck, even after I change the icon, which now for some reason tells me I need to be an admin to do, which it never asked me before. It does nothing.

Not to mention it really messed around with how my folders behave...

I would do a system restore, but I don't have any that go far back enough to when I didn't have Iconpackager.

So now I'm wondering, is there anyway I can somehow reverse this without losing my programs and work?

Rebuilding the icon cache has done absolutely nothing, and all that sfc /scannow does is remove my custom themes, which are easy no to re-install thank god.

EDIT: Oh right, when I open a program, the icon on the taskbar is a shield as well, but if I pin it to the taskbar, then unpin it, it somehow displays the normal icon as it should, until I close the program as when I open it again, it shows the shield still.

Welcome aboard, Krios ! Frankly speaking, I have never seen such a huge mess before :sarc: Are all the program icons changed to the shield one ?

Install Google Chrome over the existing installation to see if it shows the original icon . If it shows the original one, there might be a way to reverse the situation without compromising your data and work, but it will need a hard work.

One more information is needed ... is it contain Service Pack 1 or not ?

Yeah, running Service Pack 1.

I got Tuneup after I got rid of Iconpackager to use the tuneup styler to see if that would fix it, and it just shows all my icons as normal.

Anyways, installed Chrome again, still shows the same shield icon in the startmenu/taskbar.

That's why I am finding this situation a toughest one, Gary

I can fix the system icons ..... it is very simple ! But why all the program icons are displaying wrong ? Even including MS Paint

I would suggest:
Before you uninstalled Ickon Packager did you restored default windows icons? If not - install back Ickon Packager from there restore windows default icons... And then follow what guys are suggesting... Had this problem myself...years ago...And that's how I solved it...

Yes, try it ! If the default icons are still present there in the system, they will be loaded . But if this one also fails, I am thinking that the best thing you should do is a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html . I am not sure how to get all the program icons back ... really sorry for suggesting a clean install .

If you plan for a clean install, better you save all your documents in a drive other than C drive , and during partition, format C drive only.

Iconpackager is a good tool, if you use it carefully. When the clean installation is done, I will suggest you a few precautions to be taken to avoid this type of mishap in future . I am also a customizer, too; and have faced a number of problems

Yes, I had set the icons back to the windows 7 default with iconpackager before uninstalling it didn't work.

I think I'll just do a clean install of Windows 7. I'm getting a 2 TB external in a few days, so I'll just wait until then so I can backup all my files, probably for the best anyway haha!

You could try a repair install first, thereby saving your stuff. You would have 4000 updates to work through though. well with a clean install you will too.

I'll do a repair install sometime this evening or tomorrow when I have access to my disk and report back to see if that fixes it.

Okiedoki, if your disk is not SP1, when doing the updates, install SP1 separately when it becomes available in the list.

Well, did a repair install. Now every icon is a blank page instead. Created another user account to see if that was the issue, all the icons are blank pages there too. Rebuilt the icon cache again, still nothing.

Guess I'll have to do a clean install when I can get an external to backup my files.

Take it as a lesson learned Iconpackager can mess up a systems icons I have had to do a clean install because of it, now I change the icons in the .dll and save a backup of each .dll much easier in the long run.

Just list all your programs and backup all data a clean install can be a good thing now and then.

That's what I have suggested to you .... you didn't have any other way out, and you were the first person whom I suggested to do a clean install for an icon related issue, coz I knew that anything else will not work for you . Before suggesting you the final step of solutions, I had to think a lot, and discuss with other persons a lot.
