Multiple iexplore.exe processes

i have a new dell pc with win7 64bit and am having very annoying problems with IE8. I have seen over 20 iexplore.exe processes running and it locks my pc up using all the memory. they dont close even after i close all tabs I have to go in task mgr and manually close the processes to get the pc going again. my pc has 64bit and 32bit IE8, do i need to get rid of one? use an older explorer? HELP!

Try running your virus scanner and malwarebytes Malwarebytes.org and do a full system scan with both.
It could be associated with a virus or trojan but take a look at this thread to see if it sounds similar to your problem.

i should have mentioned that i have already done that and scans came back clear my pc just doesnt want to shut off the processes when i close a browser or tab they stay running eating my memory, and yes that thread is similar to my prob

what happens if you turn off tabbed browsing in IE

you may want to try starting IE without any add ons and see what happens

turned off tabbed browsing and that had no effect, now trying add ons

That does seem a bit excessive. Normally, you would have 1 instance for IE8 itself (if you use both 32-bit and 64-bit browsers simultaneously like I sometimes do you will have 2) plus 1 instance per tab, so by default when you open IE8 you should have 2 instances running.

What happens when you reboot your computer? Without running IE8, how many instances are there running? What bloatware do you have installed?

IExplore won't close, Win 7, New ASUS G73

My new laptop desktop freezes after running IE 8 - None of the desktop items are clickable, but can be run OK from taskbar or program menu. Only a reboot unfreezes tha desktop.

Task manager shows 2 or 3 versions of Iexplore.exe running after closing IE. If I terminate one instance, they all go away, and the desktop is now clickable until I run IE again.

I have no viruses - It's a brand-new clean installation, I only added MS Office 2007.

I installed Maxthon browser, and made it my default browser - Problem gone bye-bye!
