multiple iexplore instances in task manager

When looking in taskmgr, I find 14 instances of Internet Explorer running, each using around 21MB of RAM. Any ideas as to why there are so many? If I close out of IE completely, they are still there....

Hello Mahjohn,

Each instance of the iexplore.exe process is a separate opened tab in Internet Explorer, and one just for each opened Internet Explorer itself. It's part of the tab recovery feature, so if a tab crashes it will not crash Internet Explorer.

Ok....this explains each of the instances, however, when IE is closed out....the instances stay running

After you close all opened windows of Internet Explorer, all iexplore.exe (not explorer.exe) processes should end as well shortly afterwards. If not, do you have anything still running that uses IE?

The Automatic Crash Recovery (ACR) feature of Internet Explorer 8 helps prevent the loss of work in the unlikely event of browser failure. ACR takes advantage of the Loosely Coupled Internet Explorer (LCIE) feature to provide new crash recovery capabilities—including tab recovery—that minimize interruptions to a browsing session.

This is just apart of IE 8. I haven't came upon any ways to disable it. As long as you use IE 8 this is just one of the sometimes convenient but also sometimes annoying features. The only way to remove these process' is to go in manually and remove iexplore.exe or reboot your system after using IE 8. If this feature becomes a big problem I recommentd switching your Internet Browser as I recently did. I currently use Opera but there are plenty more such as Safari, Firefox, or Google Chrome, all in which rank better than IE 8, and are all free.

Thanks for the info on ACR, however, I would disagree with your assertion that Safari, Firefox, Opera and Chrome rank bettter than IE8. One simple example is IE8 ranks tops in browser security Microsoft IE 8 shines in Web browser security test - Network World

Multiple iexplorer.exe *32 instances

I hope anyone who originally had this problem and has found a resolution can help me. Currently I am running Windows7 64bit and ie9, prior I was running the same OS with ie8. I was having trouble with ie becomming non responsive and after checking the task manager I noticed multi iexplore.exe *32 running. I ended them which of course caused ie to close and started browsing again and ended with the same problem. I thought upgrading to ie9 would solve this problem but it hasn't and is getting frustrating.
