Multiple IP & Domain Problem.

Hi there.

I've searched for this problem and found nothing.

The problem is:
I have a linux Samba Server acting as a Domain controler that works OK.

The Domain controler IP is 192.168.16.254.

On the cliente I have Windows 7 Pro x64 the has the IP 192.168.16.5 and works ok.

The situation is that I regulary configure routers that work on the IP e.g. 192.168.1.254 and when I add an IP like 192.168.1.100 to the windows 7 network adapter I loose some of the Domain functions:
- I can still browse the Domain server shares, but it cannot access this client.
- When I need to make changes to the local shares that need to access the domain server users for permission attribuition, the domain doesn't appear on the "from this location".

I have tried to configure the WinS server to the IP Address os the server with no result.

This problem doesn't happen in Windows XP.

It looks like you have a W7 network adapter that you have addresses configured. Do both have default routes? Windows gets real confused when you have multiple default gateways configured. One way to help is to put a higher metric on the address that is not the primary subnet.

I don't know if I understod what you said correctly...

Anyway, my windows 7 only has one network adapter that normaly is configured this way:

IP: 192.168.16.5
Secundary IP: 192.168.1.100
GW: 192.168.16.254
DNS: 192.168.16.254
WINS: 192.168.16.254 (This was the test to check if it would solve the problem)

This problem happens to me with all Windows 7 I have in my network, all of them have similar configurations.

Sorry, What I meant was you have a single adapter with multiple IP addresses. My post wasn't clear on that.

Why do want a second IP address om the adapter?

W7 has two mechanisms for second IP addresses. Are you using the "Alternate Configuration" tab or the "Advanced" button on the Protocol Properties of the adapter?

That dual configuration (Alternate) is not available only on windoows 7, on Windows XP it was available too.

That kind of dual configuration does not work in my case because of this two reasons:
- Is only available if the first is DHCP (Automatic);
- Can not be used simultâneously.

So I have to use the "Advanced..." button to add the second IP.

It's possible that W7 is having trouble because the primary address is associated with a domain. Having one address tied to a domain but not the other as well as no default gateway may be confusing Windows.

There is a default Gateway and it is the ip of the domain controler.

This must be some king of bug on the Windows 7 domain client implementation, since it didn't happen on windows XP. Don't know about Vista since it wasn't even a subject for testing in my opinion.

What mask are you using on each of these computer, both windows 7 or otherwise? You need to have a mask of 192.168.0.0 on all computers and the router for the network to allow every computer to be seen. This will allow all the addresses I have seen in your list through.

Your primary address has a default gateway but your secondary address doesn't.

I'm not convinced that it's a bug in W7. Most likely a different way of handling domains, but not necessarily a bug.

By some chance have you have IPV5 still enabled?

I have had this issue since day one of deployment of windows 7, here's my findings...
Domain connection is lost upon reboot of PC or disconnection and reconnection of nic. The issue, in my case, is resolved by changing the subnet mask of the secondary IP address from 255.255.0.0 to 255.255.255.0, and back again upon another reboot. Frankly this solution sucks and I would love to find a more user friendly approach
